Normal Oil Temp For 8v?

Recommended Posts

kate205gti

my 8v seems to be running a higher oil temp than i'd like! it goes up to half way even when just bimbling about and sits between bars 4 and 5

this concerns me a little, the water temp and oil pressure are both fine and run quite low which is good, it does spit a bit of oil out the dipstick - not huge amounts but enough to make a hot oily smell :P i thought it might be a kinked breather but they all look ok to me

im running a tim sump and no oil cooler, i could change either of these but didnt want to mask a problem rather than fix it - or is it even a problem?

where do 8vs normally sit for oil temp please? :)

My 8 valve gets upto the third white bar. Never seen it higher than that, even when i'm hill climbing.

I run with the standard oil cooler.

it shouldn't spit any oil from the dipstick as the dipstick should seal in the tube, I'd go and get a new one from peugeot if you havent got another good one in your spares.

here's a picture from the handbook of the two temperature gauges with some of the markings made a little clearer.

the oil shouldn't sit quite that high just bimbling along (just over 110!), what are you using?

edit, all of mine get to about 90, as did sarty's 8 valver, they all have heat exchangers apart from my 205 that's a standard air-oil cooler that takes aaaages to warm up.

I'd leave the oil cooler for the time being, but do try another oil if you can.

having had both setups I'd rather a heat exchanger on a 205 rather than the oil cooler

Oil at 110 deg isn't neccessarily a bad thing, as it is hot enough to let moisture boil off out of the oil, but the oil is still fine to do its job. Over cooling of oil is just as bad as running it too hot.

Well i never those plate heat exchangers are the same as used in combi boilers. I get loads of them when they get blocked! I don't know if i would fit one to my car though?
