Annoying Engine Noise

Recommended Posts

205*31*

ok this is really annoying me I have like a tapping noise from top end of engine, sounds like when you used to put cards in your spokes on a bike as a kid noise. It picks up tempo as you accelerate its not mega loud just a faint annoying tapping.

Could it be tappets? I have had a garage do a recent oil change and not sure what grade he used but he knows his 205s so it wont have been cheap crap I am sure. I have also read its quite popular for the exhaust manifold to cause this noise?

anyone any suggestions its quite annoying

Probably a cracked manifold, remove the air box and have a look, they like to crack where the branches join together between cylinders. If this is the case try and get a later manifold as they have webbing to help prevent cracking.

I had a look at the manifold and couldn't see any sign of cracks on it around joints etc... I noticed mine seems to have a brace along it where the branches meet so I presuming this a later manifold?

so back to square one this noise? could it be tappets? or is it a poor grade of oil used?

If you do take the rocker cover off to inspect the top end and check clearances, make sure you check that the oil spray bar still has all its rubber seals on the nossels that insert into the cam caps. my 1.9 8v started tapping when hot and it was solely down to these seals being missing or having disintergrated over time. My clearances were perfect.

Or if you have a 16v it might be a dry hydraulic tappet.

Also make sure your oil pressure's all good.

back onto this. It only appears to make this noise when in gear and driving at idle it isn't there, any other ideas it might be?

cheers.

Are you sure that it's not manifold related, as that's what it sounds like to me? If definitely not cracked, then possibly blowing between the head and manifold, particularly if one or more of the studs is snapped (which is quite common). This normally sounds like a loud ticking that's worse under load and pretty much silent on overrun.

If it was an issue related to the valvetrain, I would expect the noise to be there at idle as well, and not only under load.
