Gti-6 Problem's....

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

After spending alot of time getting my 205 through an MOT (was previously written off by a KA), I suspect my piston rings are shot.

Oil is spitting out of the exhaust along with white smoke, its down on power and does not sound very happy

I'm in 2 minds on what to do, rebuild or replace. I'm no enigne builder and have no clue when it comes to internals, I'm hoping I can get hold of Mr. Taylor (if your reading this your inbox is full)

I guissing it would proberbly be cheaper & quicker to just replace the engine? Its compleatly standard internally.

Knowing that Dan Taylor has a new job and my not have time to do the work is there anyone else that could possibly do the swap local?

Thanks,

Neil

white smoke to me would suggest a headgasket rather than rings.

But oil (lots of it) coming out of the exhaust?

There is no mayo either....

Lack of mayo means nothing tbh - most headgaskets seem to fail between cylinder and waterway in my experience, not waterway to oilway (which would produce mayo)

Have you done a compression test? Low compression that improves dramatically with a teaspoon of oil down the bores would be a tale-tale of knackered rings

I dont have a compression tester.

It happend today on the way home, I was hoping for Dan to be able to diagnose

Its not lost any water either.....

I only presumed it was the ring's as a work college said "oil coming out of the exhuast, could be the rings or the valve stem seals....."

Hopefully you dont have an engine like I had.

Has it been running/working for a while?

Mine had 2 headbolts that were completely loose and 2 were rounded off.... grrrr. It's still not right compression's down s*it loads

for the price of engines

just get another second hand one and break this one up and sell the bits, you'd be suprised what you will get for the bits :)

It has been running for about a 2 months since the MOT, previuos to that it was sat in my garage for about 3/4 of a year & previous to that I was driving it for about a year. It was even at pugfest 08 Clicky

I think that's my only option, do you think its possible for a novice (me:lol:) to be able to do the swap?

Will my current ECU work with the other enigine? Or do I need to swap these?

My current engine is from a 306, if I brought a replacement engine for an xsara is there any problems I should be aware of?

Thanks

all you need is a bare engine, you can fit all your stuff onto it, it can be from a phase 2 xsara as long as you swap a few of the sensors and keep your exhaust manifold as the Phase 2 xsara was Multiplexed and had a different join to the cat.

simple job,

just get new inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets, swap over all your stuff , probably do in a day easy, with an engine lift :)
