I Had A Little Misfire......

Recommended Posts

Lankylad78

....Picked up last week on a run out with the South Cheshire/North Staffs lads. I had a root around the following day and found that water and mud had sprayed up into the engine bay and dampened one of the leads and plugs. Removed, cleaned, dried out, sprayed WD40 on the lead, and it started up fine and sounded sweet. Lovely jubbly.

Over the weekend it was playing on my mind, so figured for the sake of £12 I would replace all of the plugs. So yesterday I toddled off to the local car parts shop. On my way there the misfire started again, so figured I would head to my old mans house as it was closer. 1 stall and 3 rather large back-fires (I'm sure I saw an old gent have flashback to the Somme!) later the car dies 100 yards from the old fella's front door.

Anyway, long story short, replaced the plugs and it started up first time and sounded really smooth. Problem sorted I thought. However, for some reason it also sounded REALLY loud. And I mean LOUD! Especially for a standard exhaust. Inspection underneath revealed a blow in the exhaust, presumably caused by the back-fires. I removed the backbox to get a better picture for you guys. Let me know if you're having trouble spotting the hole and I'll see if I can get a close up for you........

The long and short of this palava is that a £12 fix resulted in an extra 50 odd quid due to my own stupidity. Well, you live and learn.

 Yeah, just a bit. My initial reaction was "holy f*ck!". Whereas my Dad (in his usual sarcastic tone) quipped "Are you sure it wasn't like that when you bought it?" Followed by "Shall we see if we can get it welded?" Very droll!

This happened to me a few years (in fact probably 10 years) ago on my 405 Mi16. Trying to get somewhere thru traffic on a really hot day, car was getting really hot and a bit grumpy because of it. Parked up at my destination and as I turned off the engine there was an almightly "BOOM" and on looking underneath my backbox looked as yours does. Only pisser was that the new one was over £85 at the time!

 Cheers Ade! Wish I'd thought of that

Tom, I was a bit miffed on price at first. Went to the local CES who quoted £80 for one in stock. I tried to explain that I did only want the backbox! Then went to see a distant relative who works at the local pug garage. He rang the very same CES (where I'd been less than 5-minutes before) and got me the same backbox for £55. Just goes to show the mark-up people charge.

£55 quid still sounds expensive chap - if you need anything like that again give me a shout as i can sort you out a decent price.

My list price on a 205 backbox is £45 plus vat and i should be able to do a decent discount off that.

Haha, that's impressive! I thought it was loud when my Mi backfired dramatically when the rotor arm fell off last summer in a very crowded Llandudno, but that must have been something else!

On the subject of misfires, can anyone guess why my 309 might have had a slight misfire from cold when I first brought it home?

I put a magnet down there to see if I could fish anything out and gave up after about half an hour, nothing came out. No idea what's happened there, whether it's come off in small bits and just gone straight out the engine or what. I've done over 2k miles in it in the 5 weeks I've had it and not had any problems so far. Next time the belt & tensioner are done I might do the head gasket as well, just to be safe.

fair dues seems they changed the name then was originally called Chester exhaust supplies I just assumed they were abbreviating it
