Can You Take The Key Barrel Out Of The Petrol Cap?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if it's possible? I got a cap off a 5 door for my gti and it's ever to slightly different. Colored bit doesn't fit on it basically. So I thought maybe I can swap the barrels round? Would make it easier as then I'd have one key for everything on my car. :P

Yes, but i can't remember how.

But, if all you want to do is swap the coloured section, it should be really easy tbh.

Yes. Iirc all the parts are just clipped together. The black bit that likes up the with rear quarter badge comes off, then the body-coloured part underneath. Inside there's just the lock and a spring.

You might need to glue it back together as they sometimes like to ping apart once they've been opened.

Nope, they are different. I've taken the body colored bit off both and they're different. I had to hack saw the 5 door cap to put those indents in it to make the gti colored but fit, but it doesn't. When the colored bit is off, can you remove the barrel? You can take the silver bit off the top of the barrel, so does the rest come out..?

Does that make sense?

I have historically done exactly the same as you Monkee87 with a 5 door lockset so everything worked off one key. However the cap didn't work so I had to get another. What I did was to take the silver cover off the top and take the little pins out of the key barrel so any key would fit to open it. That way it looked standard :)

These are the only pics I can find from back in 2004!

How did you get that bit of the cap out?!! (last pic) If I can do that I'll put it in a gti cap and hey presto, problem solved!! I've got a spare gti cap and the 5 door cap, sure I can make one that works off my key from the 3 of them. :)
