What Next? Just Bought Some Bike Carbs

Recommended Posts

dan_cole69

Hi all,

Just wondering if someone could help me. I have just bought a set of twin weber 40 DCOE's, for my 1.6 gti 205.

Here is a list of things that I have bought/ or am going to, could you just tell me if I have forgotten anything or any advice would be apprieciated (Cant Spell!)

* Set of twin weber 40 DCOE's

*Manifold to suit both engine and carbs

*Fuel Pressure regulator

*Linkage kit for throttle

Think thats everything?

Thanks

Dan

never knew DCOE's were fitted to Bikes?

for the mentioned carbs you'd need the parts you listed, as well as the mounting rubbers that go between the carbs and the manifold, a pair of Filters.

as for the pressure regulator, that depends onw how you work the fuel pump, you can either double up on the regs and use the standard pump which isn't ideal.

or mod the intank pump to be a simple pickup and use an external pump like a facet and a single regulator.

the oil filler cap has two takeoffs on the injection engines, the carb engines only had one, you can buy the single outlet cap from halfords IIRC.

You know what I mean :)

Mounting rubbers will come with the manifold im buying, so that is sorted.

I had pressumed I would have to get filters, had a look and found some, but I would quite like a box that goes to one filter similar to shine's project. I dont suppose anyone knows of where I could get one of these or would I have to make it myself?

As for the fuel pump im not quite sure what your talking about so could you repeat it to me but in a way you would tell a small child or retard :P

Thanks

Think about it dude. Your car was fuel injected, running fuel under 3bar pressure to squirt through the injectors.

You carbs won't need pressure anywhere near that, i.e. just a supply to top up the float chambers.

I reckon a good search through builds on here and the 'net in general of carb installs should see you right, and then specific questions 'the collective' on here can help you solve.

You're on the right lines, but a little more research and you'll be flying.

I have used the search engine im not new on here. All the topics covering this area dont go into enough detail.

So what your saying is that my current fuel pump is pushing fuel through at about 3 bar at the moment and I need it to be less, how much less? and surely a fuel pressure regulator that can be adjusted from 0 bar to 1 bar and anything inbetween will do the job?

thanks dan

Dont forget trumpets and new fuel line too. It's worth checking what length trumpets you need too, as they can affect engine, and also your choices of filters.

I have used a pressure regualtor on my carb setup, which works fine, but I'm going to change it to a facet pump asap as i think my stardard pump is on its last legs anyway!

Does this cap have the large outlet or the small one, if you know what I mean?

There are as stated two options.

A standard injection pump at 3 bar is to much pressure for the carbs to handle, they work at a generally accepted max of 4-5psi (0.3 bar). A single reg can't work in this range so what you do is fit a tubo reg that has a return to tank on it, this diverts some of the extra fuel back to the tank (just like normal), you then fit a second reg after that which drops the pressure to the 4-5 psi that the carbs need.

The alternative is to fit one fuel regulator and a new fuel pump such as a Holley (work best as puller) or a Facet (work best as a pusher). You retain the original pump in place but you mod this so that it acts as a pick up only and doesnt do anything else.

If you go for option two, bear in mind the use of the car? If it is for competition use you cannot have things like the pump and connections inside the cabin. As such I believe the Holley fuel pump mounted in the engine bay works better.

I just use a pump that is set to run at the correct pressure with no regulator.

Had this set up for 5 years without any problems.

Ok, im starting to get my head round this.

So if I wanted to put a turbo reg on and then a normal reg, where would I get a turbo reg? I pressume somewhere like demontweeks would do it or is there a certain brand/model that would be best?

I think also that I may post my experience of fitting webers on this thread for future users that also have limited/little knowledge of this area.

Thanks

Dan

I have just found this CLICKY

Would this not do what I want and save me buying a turbo pressure reg?

look at the spec

Fuel pressure gauge (0-1 Bar / 0-15psi)

If your running 3 bar already the reg won't cope, you could run this after the turbo reg though as an extra fuel filter and reg combined.

You need this one.

Just to confirm before I buy, I need it to be for a twin carbs yeah?

thanks

"Available for single and twin carburettor applications. The single carburettor version can also be used to regulate pressure on a carburetted engine where a high pressure fuel injection pump is used. The pressure is dropped from as high as 60 Psi down to 5 Psi making it ideal for twin carburettor conversions".

It does state in the details

Option 1 - Single Carburettor

Option 2 - Twin Carburettor

Surely the twin will have two pipes going to each weber, however I already have a T piece for the webers and I can only pressume that I only need a Single reg?

I know i'm asking some pretty obvious questions (to some of you) but for people like me and other newbies in the future, these questions are helpfull.

At the moment some of these answers are knarky to say the least, and if I was new and reading this topic I would think "bloody hell better not ask anything because you just get made to feel like an idiot"

Come on, cut a fellow enthusiast some slack and just humour me

Thanks

Dan

First things first, The fact that you are running twin carbs is not relevant as you are not using the turbo reg for it's intended purpose, you need to realise that this is a fudge. The turbo regulator is for dropping the 3 bar pressure from the pump and returning the excess fuel to the tank. The turbo reg does not connect to the carbs at all.

So to answer your question, option 1 - Single

You then buy as second reglulator which is run after the turbo reg to drop the pressure again to the desired pressure. It is this reg that is connected to the carbs.

pm me your email address and I'll email you a picture of how the set up can/should look, it might make more sense that way.

Right I have sent you an PM, so if you could email a diagram that would be great. Thanks again

As for this topic im closing it and i think from now on i will use google and other ways of searching I also bought a book on it so hopefully that will help.

I just want to say thankyou to all the people that did help me, I wont be asking again.

I know im not very mechanically minded and I cant spell very well. But when ever I put my fingers to the keyboard to write a post I always but 110% in and always try to contribute when ever I can.
