Windscreen Washer Pump

Hi,

Been an awful long time since I posted on here, there's certainly many new names and a fair few who've moved onto other cars now. My 205 Turbo Technics 'project re-shell' which started around 2004 I believe, was eventually completed and back on the road for July 2009 in a form for those who may remember me.

Anyway, I have a problem with it eating front windscreen washer pumps. I'd put it down to a few secondhand pumps I'd been using, but it's now been five of them! I've stuck a multimeter on the live going to the pump and when the ignition is on I'm getting around 5v and then around 12v when I pull the stalk to wash the screen as you'd expect. There is a 5v feed going to the stalk connector on wire 102. This feed I assume is eventually burning out my washer pumps, but where is it coming from? I've pulled the wiper relay and it goes, replaced the relay with another and I still get 5v. Can anyone confirm I shouldn't have this voltage here? At the moment, my only thoughts are to fit a relay in the circuit to stop the 5v going to the washer pump.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

I think this is normal, had issues with my washer pump many moons ago, measured 5v on the pump connector which dropped to 0 when I removed the wiper relay.

Went to pug for a replacement as I thought the relay was at fault and the guy let me try it before buying, was exactly the same with the new relay...

could be the wiper stalk, shouldn't be any voltage at the washer pump.

Thanks for the replies.

I'd measured 5v at the wiring which connects to the stalk itself and if I recall correctly, even with the stalk disconnected, it still read 5v. I've two spare stalks kicking around, was going to put another one on.

If it normally reads 5v, then why are my washer pumps being eaten at an alarming rate? I'm not using them often, the car has basically travelled to a handful of shows in all the time it was on the road. Currently off the road, pending an MOT test. One pump went out in style, randomly spraying my screen with water for a few seconds before never working again.
