Help Needed...(searched Everywhere!))

Hey all, i have recently swapped a 205 gti with bx 1900 GTI engine, with my old 106..

The GTI in general, looked abused and mistreated but ran ok. So i thought id spend a bit of cash on her to try n get her running sweet as body is in excellent condition!

initial problems when brought...

- AFM cover removed (might have been fiddled with?)

- HT lead snapped with fur on contact with spark plug.

- Need throttle to start-up,(takes 10-15seconds to start.)

- Oil leak somewhere (not too much of a problem.)

One of my friends gave me his AFM (non fiddled with)

Brought new HT leads for her.

it was running alot smoother aswell after these where changed.

put a full tank of fuel in and redex injector clener,

for 95% of the full tank it was running like a dream the other 5% would misfire randomly.

In order to cure the misfire i would need to turn the ignition off and on again, then bumpstart it in whatever gear i was in. when the ignition was turned off, in motion, there where no lights on the dash (might help)??

it got down the the last quarter of fuel, and mis-firing really bad, so i filled her up again with normal fuel (different fuel station) and added redex again.

now....on startup it will still take a while to fire, once its alive i need to nurse the throttle until it is firing on all cyclinders (bout 20 seconds),

it will idle perfect at 1k and 900 rpm under electrical load. then 5 mins into engine running it will all of a sudden drop to 500rpm, maybe lower,

trying to stall itself (but doesnt) and misfireing badly throughout the rev range under really light throttle, untill, ignition switched off and stopped then restarted again, to which it will idle ok for a couple of minutes before the above process is repeated.

I have noticed a bit of oil on one of the points in the dizzy cap, although this has been cleaned it doesnt make any difference..(i hope)!!

I have clened up most parts in engine bay hoping for a quick fix!but this doesnt seem to be the case!!

im really stumped and have limited funds!!

any help or advice would be most welcoming,

thanks all

Joe

With the ignition turned off you won't have any dash lights, they aren't powered.

It might be worthwhikl taking all the breather hoses off & thoroughly cleaning them through along with the internals of the AFM & throttle body (including the idle bypass screw) with carb cleaner to remove any gunk thats built up in them. ONce you've refitted them all clean get it idling warm & set your idle to approx 1k hot.

The cold start throttle nursing is pretty common but once set up properly shouldn't be needed imo.

Is your SAD working & pugged in correctly? Because its had an engine change the SAD should have a black plug on & the coolant temp sensor a blue one,

commonly mixed up that can cause running issues.

what i ment by that, was the 2nd click on ignition, when dash lights light up( i.e stop light etc)

sorry for the poor explaination.

i have cleaned breather pipes thoroughly, and idle has been set, internals meaning the flap inside or take of the cover?

im not sure where the SAD is located, am i right to believe it is the stainless saucer thing under the distributer? if so this has a output with nothing on the end!!! :s

i just went out to have a look and clean up, and it started ok, and idle fine, it seems to be on really light throttle that it will then develop a mis-fire and run like a bag of crap..it almost feels like not enough fuel!!!

thanks for the quick reply pugtorque

Quoting is hard...haha.. :P

anyways. i thought as i have 2 afms that where working.i decided to have a play with the lean/rich spring inside the cover of 1 of them,

i twisted it a few notches then drove it to see if it was running rich or lean, and adjusted accordingly, because the adjustment has stopped the completely random misfire stint, i am thinking the afm on this is sort of knackered,

will a AFM of a 1900 GENTRY fit the bx gti 8v lump i have in mine?

..it is however, some what hesitant unless im full throttle, or really light throttle. and slighly misfire occasionally.is there anyone near bude (cornwall) that could have a look and help diagnose a overall problem,

i dont really understand the SAD article, as my engine code is d6b, and not sure if there all the same fitment.x nursing the throttle on start up is not a big deal at the mo, unless that is effecting the whole cars overall performance??

it was running ok when i brought it, with a knackered ht lead and afm cover off,

since then its sort of got worse, and matey who i brought it was was a proper chaved up 40 year old with soverign rings on each finger, the full monty...(not that im judging) :)

cheers

The sAD is underneath the thermostat housing below the distributor but you can check it by squeezuing the pipe which runs to the front of the inlet pipe betweent he AFM & throttle body. Whencold it should struggle or die but once warm make no difference.

The afm from a BX GTI won't be fitted to your car, they have the ecu built into them so simply won't fit the loom unless its also been swapped from the original 205 GTI loom.

Have a look on the black plastic cap & see what part number is fitted to it & try to find one the same number.

The Gentry will probably be a cat equipped car so again no good to you.

Graham.
