Diy Coilovers, Top Mount Problem

Recommended Posts

Turbo7379

I'm modifying a pair of gp n billys from std springs to coilovers using the compbrake kit here.

http://www.compbrake.co.uk/SUSPENSION/SUSPENSION4.html

I read the 2 posts about a similiar conversion but its not clear how the top end goes together.

I want to use the original top mounts as they were rebuilt using new bearings & bbm uprated rubber cones ( and I cant afford spherical bearing ones ). The top spring pan supplied looks like the one on the left on the compbrake page but I can't see how it will fit together using any of the original top mount & still retain the bearing & rubber cone. The only thing I could think of was to bore out the centre of the supplied top pan so that it fits over the damper rod but I don't like that idea.

So any of you like Jerseypug who have carried out this conversion please help!

Cheers, Turbo

I've already got the strut bodys, what I need info on is how to mount the coilovers using std top mounts.

you need a top spring pan that'll fit the standard pug bearing, I'm not sure at the moment where you'd get on of these as the only place I know that do them is having website issues.

Just what I was thinking! :D My steering is heavy enough now WITH bearings. :)

I was considering using the standard top spring pans, weld on a ring of 2.5" steel tube to locate the spring & 'trim off' where the std spring sat. Or if I can get access to a lathe I could modify the supplied cone shaped top pan so that it will locate onto the std bearing.

I think my struts don't have a long enough thread to use solid bearing top mounts. I'll know better when I get them stripped out of the car but I'm busy painting the outside of the house atm. :)

Naturally I'm praying for rain so I can get back into the workshop. :D
