Typical Items To Replace For Overhaul

Recommended Posts

NNPUT

Hi guys, new to the forum and joined back in Feb. Information on here is plentifull i must say.

I have a 1989 F Reg Black 1.9 Gti which i have owned since 1997. I took it off the road when the two kids where born as i didnt think it was all that safe for the wife to drive.

The pug has sat on the drive since being taken off the road 9 years ago.

I want to get the pug back on the road but prior to commencing works i wondered what typical items will have seized, rusted etc to give me an idea of the volume of work, timescales and costs.

My memmory of running the car back in the late 90's made me recall that the rear torsion bar set up has probably seized and needs overhauling. The brake discs are thick with rust and i'm guessing the brake pipes are probably shot underneath.

Any advice guys???

I'd put some pictures up of it before taking it off the road but i'm unsure how!

You've got the right idea and have mentioned disks:

Brake lines: metal may well need redoing and flexi may have perished

Rear beam: replace it. Anthony or Jord294 do them on exchange plus others I think. Check the For Sale section

Engine and chassis grounds: Renew - these always corrode and cause problems

Tyres: after 9 years perhaps perished

Brake pads (and shoes if a 1.6): replace

Injectors: may need a service (from £5 ea by MadProfessor in here)

Battery: renew I suspect

Oil & coolant: renew*

*Warning of block/head corrosion

Pending no nasties with corrosion of any kind (engine and chassis)...beam plus pads/shoes will be ~£300. Brake lines and fluids may add another £50-£70.

A day's (long work) with good tools, no stubborn bolts ( ), perhaps a bit of help including making lines, exercising calipers, bleeding brakes etc etc.

Might not be a bad idea to do oil, fuel and air filters too, making this a £450 day I reckon. And the fuel may need replacing too!

To add to the above I would not want the engine to run before it has seen a new cambelt after that length of time.

I've just finished a refurbished rear beam if this is of interest to you, can potentially get it to Redditch for you as well, as my Dad lives there.

To post pictures you first need to upload them to the internet.

One of the easy ways to do this is use "Photobucket" (http://photobucket.com/)

Go on that site and sign up for an account (no cost)

Once you have done this you can then use Photobucket to upload your pictures. Go to "My Home" and then click the "Upload Images and Video" icon and then follow the instructions.

Once you have done this, you then need to paste the link to your picture into your forum reply. On Photobucket select the picture you want to add to the forum. On the left of the screen there should be a box titled "Share this image". Beneath this you will see something similar to the following-

]IMG]http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/tomfenton/3691681960_76d36cb5f3.jpg[/img]

Copy and paste this into your reply, note that I have reversed the first bracket as otherwise the forum would show you the picture that link relates to, and not the link I want you to be able to see what it looks like.

Hope this makes sense, good luck. Getting your pictures uploaded to Photobucket is the first step.

Guys, thanks for the response. I've recently built a 16' x 10' workshop so i now have room to strip the car and to box up all the bits and store them whilst overhauling other parts of the car. Plus as the workshop is big enough i can still do this when the weather turns worse and over the winter.

Heres a few of photos of the car whilst it was on the road. It was standard apart from a Full magnex exhaust system, K&N filter, front lowering springs and later front indicators and rear light lenses.
