Admitting Defeat

Recommended Posts

I know it's not spoken of very much on here for obvious reasons but I've been in the process of changing my clocks over due to oil pressure and odometer not working. Sourced some new clocks but with +40k mileage for the car, so thought not a problem I'll just change it. Anyway not going to say how I changed, or tried to change it, but it was just too fiddely for me to set it properly and I've admitted defeat.

But now I just want to get the best ideas on how to prove the milage on the clock is not genuine (+40k).

On Zebedy101's car he has the old print style strip stickers stating when the engine was changed etc so thats an option, but I know if I was going to look at a car and the owner said "By the way, the clock is showing 140k but it's actually only done 100k" I'd be a bit suspicious and probably not take his word for it.

What kind of thing would you be happy seeing if you were buying a car, to convice you of the proper milage?

So just putting the new clocks in and making a small note of it?

im sure the clocks must be "doable"

speedo cable and electric drill would do it!

Not backwards, and to go forwards I'd have to advance nearly the whole 999,999 miles.

I've just written up a letter with copies of invoices for the new (used) clocks to put in with the service history. Hopefully will explain itself.

That's unless Antony wants to reply to my PM within the next couple of weeks

As an enthusiast perhaps my attitude is a little different, but because I know how easy it is and how common it is to replace the instruments, I think I'd be a little open minded as a buyer if faced with this situation.

As said MOT certificates will show half the story as there will be a sudden and dramatic difference between the marked mileages on the 2 certificates at either side of when the work was done. I'd also like to see some photographic evidence, so you could show photos of the work in progress, as you disassemble the dash and remove the old instruments, showing the 2 clusters and their mileage next to each other, and then the final assembly. And whilst it's easy to fake, if you could include the date stamps on the photos that would help.

The dash is still apart so I will do just that, thanks.

Not so much of a grouch as people make out, eh?

Why don't you replace the speedo part of the speedo? It's really easy to do. That way you can use your existing milage but in your new speedo. Don't need to clock it or anything. None of this business with winding them with a drill.

Well I've already bought the clocks so dont really fancy getting another set, think I'll just document it well enough to show people it's genuine.

Its really easy to do so you must've made a simple mistake to mess it up badly enough to admit defeat imo.

Graham.
