Bloody Liner Seals (i Guess)

Recommended Posts

skinner2k3

Well after spinning a big end <100 miles after fitting and setting up the new cylinder head, then pulling the engine out swapping bottom ends refitting with new shells and of course cylinder head gasket number 2, more oil, lots more time etc etc......I got the engine back in and running this weekend and took it out for a run. Checked the oil, mayo! Bollox!

The only thing I can think of is I have disturbed the liner seals at some point, probably when removing the old head from the donor engine. As shortly after they were clamped before anything was touched.

I am going to remove the sump (again) clean it all up and fill the coolant to try and spot a leak.

Has anyone ever known of products like rad weld sealing leaking liners? I really don't have the time or enthusiasm to pull all that work apart again.

If the liner seals have gone the engine needs to be stripped down and the seals replaced, worth checking the liner seal seats also as they do corrode.

Sorry, none here. Or if I do have any I can never find them, to the point that when I want to light my blowtorch, I end up striking up with the TIG for a spark....

on my tu there did seem to be a fair bit of corrosion, and even when you replace the seals i didnt have that confidence feeling!! coud you maybe just take the sump of and the head off and do it in the car??

thank they only need to move them a tad to break the seal.

funiest thing i have seen is someone push a car out the workshop to find out the car was in gear

Looks like it will be going into the garage for a while until I can find the enthusiasm to take things apart again then.

Still assuming it is the liners but to be fair I cant think what else it could be. It was a freshly skimmed head, new gasket, all surfaces were cleaned and degreased etc etc. It drove perfectly, no white smoke or water in the exhaust.

I fitted the XU10 oil pump spring so when cold it had great oil pressure, as it warmed up the pressure started to drop away a touch, I guess where the oil was being forced passed the seals.

Bugger, I hate these things sometimes!

Liner seals will have no effect on oil pressure. Oil pressure is determined by the small bearing clearances that the oil is forced past by the pump. Oil pressure always drops off slightly as the engine warms up, due to the oil viscosity changing with temperature.

When liner seals give up, it is water being forced under pressure into the crankcase, not the other way around.

Fair enough, it might have been dipping as I came on and off the throttle.

That makes sense as what I first noticed was my water bottle catch tank had fired its contents onto the underside of the bonnet.

If I do take it apart again, I want to be confident (as much as reasonably possible) I am fixing the right thing. I am sure the head/head gasket is not the culprit, is there anything else this could be other than liner seals?

Does anyone know the part number for the liner seals. I have checked service box and cant figure out where they are listed.

Thanks

Ok people I am going to brighten your day now. If you ever do something really stupid remember this thread and take comfort in the knowledge you are not the only moron to wield a spanner.

The liner seals haven't gone! I know what is wrong.

Ready.......

I put the head gasket on back to front!

There has been allot of water in the cam cover, the lobes themselves are ok but the buckets look marked so will whip the cam out and probably change them and re-shim.

What a twat!

DOH! not the first and certainly wont be the last

I took an engine apart recently with a friend who'd picked up a 1.6 engine for free, it had suffered a blown gasket and it had seemingly gone again shortly after, it was the wrong way round amongst a few other faults!

you can re-dress the top surface of the buckets easily enough just like you'd do with the Mi16 ones on this link - http://www.taylor-eng.com/16v_head/16v_head.htm

then re-shim as necessary as you mentioned.

I was literally tidying my garage and looked at the old block sat there with the gasket on and thought "I wonder if........ah bollox!"

I have a set I had already cleaned up so they can go in if the originals don't clean up. Luckily I only did about 4 miles on it and nothing looks un-salvageable.

Just glad I dont need to drop the sump, all those bolts are a pain in the arse
