Do you actually need to change it? I mean, is it tax exempt?

But if you do want to change it on the log book, then you will need something official like an engineers report, as the DVLA are reportedley utter wankers about this sort of thing these days. It's bad enough (apparently) when you try to change the log book to show an increase in capacity, and therefore a higher tax bracket, so you can bet that they are going to be very difficult about a change to a lower capacity.

With you being in the trade, I'm sure you most know some friendly mechanics who can just issue confirmation on some garage headed paper to confirm the engine has been changed.

i have a polo gti which used to be a 1.6 changed it on logbook to a 1200 odd cc engine (g40 fitted into a 6n2 shell) and it returned as a 1.2 odd  cheaper roadtax :)

When I went from a 1.6 to an Mi16 in my 205, I sent them photographic evidence of the engine in the car, a letter confirming that the work was done by myself and though I don't work for a garage nor have an engineer's report, I am an experienced engineer etc (Veero from here kindly sent me a copy of the covering letter he wrote when he did the same as a template) and they didn't kick up a fuss. Initially they sent me the V5 back with the engine size corrected, but the engine code the same, so I had to send it off to them again reminding them of the new engine code. Other than that I had no issues. I've also heard that as GLP said they're more likely to throw a wobbler if it involves you paying less tax because of the new engine being smaller, but then if your car is tax exempt then that shouldn't be an issue either. They're a bit hit & miss the DVLA as to who they pick on for certain things it seems.

I converted a 1.6 to an MI16 about 6 years ago. I changed it through the DVLA and all was well. I sold it to a mate about 2 years later and when we changed the V5 into his name it came back as a 1.6

I sent 3 letters and copies of the log book showing the MI16 conversion on the V5 and they still would not have it. They demanded proof that the engine was bigger.

Another issue we have had of late was with a brand new Alfa I sold. It is a Brera 3.2 V6. When we sold it we paid the tax as we should and the V5 came back showing the emissions, engine size and the engine number from a 1.4 Turbo engine. The Brera does not come with a 1.4 engine!

They now will not have it that it is a 3.2 V6 (if it was a 1.4T it would be £110 a year to tax, as a 3.2 like it is the tax is more than £400)

I have had the same before with a Rangerover that I sold new and it was registered as a TDV6 when it was infact a Supercharged V8.

They are a bunch of useless jobsworths.

ALEX

I know a girl who is selling a Tax exempt beetle. (my GF, friends sister)

I was going to buy it as it needs work, but I've too much on at the mo.

If anyone is interested I'll find out if she's still got it

I work there as well. I get a fair bit of abuse most days as I work on one of casework teams. Unfortunately we just enforce rules made by the government.

Best bet would be to get as much documentation as possible on the engine change and that should save a lot of hassle.
