Fuel How Far To Push :)

Recommended Posts

yo well my gti fuel gauge has started to show the light sometimes solid sometimes flashing other times it goes out :) quite accurate :D its done about 85miles at minute on £20 of normal unleaded which I do believe isn't bad for all town driving and traffic but how far... I got backup in the form of £5 worth of fuel in a can in car guess wait for stuttering... I read some can get about another 12 odd litre when light is on?

Generally in my experience, during normal driving, the light starts flickering on with around 8-10 litres in the tank, and is usually on constantly with around 5 litres remaining.

In the past I've generally not worried until the light shows steadily, as prior to that it'll often flash or glow faintly and will go out again after a corner or something. But when on steadily, I assume there to be approx 1 gallon left in reserve, which depending on driving style and engine spec/condition should be good enough for another 25-30 miles. It's not something I've chosen to test though!

My light is very tempramental, I have found that it varies with the different suspesion setups I have had. I thought I had cracked it and knew it in and out then lowered my car and I ran out of petrol. Also I often find that I have more when going down hill than uphill.

Well I'm only going by what I've heard in the past, that the reserve is approx 1 gallon.

If you think about it, logically it makes sense. With any car, once the warning light is on you need enough fuel to reach the next nearest station (assuming you are too stupid to notice you are low on fuel before the light comes on :)). On a motorway you can often travel about 15 miles between stations. If you're out off the beaten track and don't know where the nearest station is then you may have to travel even further. So I think it's pretty reasonable to assume at least 30 miles should be possible once your warning light comes on.

differs with each and every car. If you are like me and push the tank levels to the last breath, then just carry a 5ltr can with you to check it out properly=simples.

I just judge how many miles I have left by how loud the fuel pump whine is :)

In my experience of Peugeots their reserve seems to be 5 litres.

I was once on an emergency misson in my old Xsara VTS down the motorway to go and recover my sister who had just parked the 106 I had renovated and given her 4 weeks before in a signpost.

Anyway, on the way down the M1 I knew I needed fuel, to anyone who is familiar with the route, my options were Donington Park services, which require a detour off the motorway round a couple of roundabouts etc, or carry on down onto the A42/M42 and call at the services which are just off the motorway, and also have a McD, handy as I had just done 12hr nights and was a bit peckish to say the least.

Approaching Donington Park services exit from the motorway, I am low, but the light isn't on yet. Carry on past, and hey presto the light appears. OK I think, its about another 15 miles to where I'm aiming, no problem. 4 miles later I ran out of fuel. Bastard french f***ers.

I wait till it stays on regardless of a road incline/decline then I fill up and reset the trip counter.

What light? Mine doesn't work atall so i just guess, fuel guage does whatever it wants at the time aswell which doesn't help. I have managed just over 50 miles after the light coming on in a discovery though, which included 9 miles after the computer said it was empty.

Driving back to Bournemouth from Oxford, I had run the fuel very low in my 205 until the light was on and still had a few miles to go. I made it home, and the next day started her up to go straight to the nearest petrol station (under a mile away). Just as I signalled left to pull into the forecourt, the engine spluttered, i dipped the clutch and rolled up to the pump, just as the engine cut out. B)
