Was the engine running when it snapped off?

As Davie says.

But that sounds seriously wrong or difficult to do! What snapped? Did the camshaft itself snap or shear? Did the pulley or just the woodruff key break? Not quite sure how you've done this: with a torque wrench, spanner, windy or as Davie says was it running and something jammed and it 'broke'?

If running, then it's possible you've had valve clash. But really we need to know exactly what happened and under what conditions.

(EDIT: Also not sure why you can't post this in technical. What did it say? Not enough posts? I thought that was only in the trading section.)

engine was running at the time it is the bolt that holds the cam pulley on. was also starting it by wire straight from the battery to the starter motor at the time as it was sticking then came horrible grinding noise then a little bang and the engine died thought it had snapped the cambelt at first then see the pulley in the wrong place.

Worst case scenario is a replacement head (and startermotor) and ofcourse a slight dent in your bank. (looking between 150-300 for a decent rebuilt 8v head)

Regarding the "can't post in Technical" part, I'm guessing you made the same mistake as another new member. Were you trying to post in the Engine Works subforum of the Projects section? That would explain the problems, as this subforum is closed and only the mods can move project topics in to them. For this type of topic you need to post in the 'normal' XU Engine and Gearbox Service and Maintenance forum (I think that's what it's called  Something like that, anyway).
