dry tappets maybe if its coming from the top theres no bearings there . Dry cams maybe take the top off and have a look you might have run a cam dry and its damaged it

I know this noise! Sadly i dont know the cause or the cure, but a previous mi16 i had would make a god awful rattle from the head when cold from about 2700-3000rpm, absolutely no noise above or below this and no noise when up to temperature. I would be very much interested in the cause, however, a friend of mine now has this engine and we are planning a tappet refurb on it in the not to distant future, so i will report if that does any good (or bad).

Also, i believe this engine had a cambelt failure in the past, so i suppose the old 'its not a dodgy tappet, its a bent valve' point of view could come into play, but surely a bent valve wouldnt just make noise at a certain rpm, or go quiet when up to temp?

Anyway, sorry i have been no help at all, but at the very least i have bumped the topic!

Sam

Hope this isn't your problem but...

I smashed the sump on my old 405 Mi16 on a 12 car, realised what I'd done and killed it quick. However afterwards it had a strange tappy rattle in the mid range, and occasionally would go down on power and then recover. never managed to figure out what it was.

Until one day on the M69 it broke a conrod in half and grenaded itself. The lot was scrap, crank, head, block, etc. I think the tap was a little end had picked up, this gradually got hotter and hotter on the M.way until it seized which bent the rod and then the rest was history.

Tom, i really hope this isnt the problem on my friends engine because he got it from me (although i was completely honest about the rattle and he heard it many times when we were trying to diagnose it). Although, did yours only make it when cold in the midrange, and did it disappear completely when warm or when out of the mid-ish rev band?

Thanks in advance,

Sam

TBH I don't remember the details now, it was about 8 years ago!
