Bought a D reg 1.9 gti a few weeks ago and been sorting out a few things (servicing, gearbox oil change etc...) and noticed that the water in the cooling system is a bit grimey ...

So this weekend im gonna flush the system through but dont know if there is any bleed valves ? and where they are ?

Any help much appreciative....

rescue dude

On the later cars there are bleed valves on the two hoses that connect to the bulkhead and go to the heater matrix.

Don't think the earlier cars have these though?

they all had the bleed point on the upper heater hose.

there's one on the thermostat housing just above the cover.

otherwise they tend to bleed quite well, I just fill the system up, fire it up and crack open the bleed valves, close each in turn as coolant flows out and watch for bubbles in the header tank, when the level in the tank doesn't drop any more I fit the cap and go for a short drive as it takes ages to warm up sat still.

here you go

undo bleed screw where top arrow is first. keep reservoir topped up fully. then once air is bled from heater matrix hose, undo bleed screw by thermostat cap. don't remove. it should be a hollow brass screw

water level when done, should be at the top of the red insert in your reservoir :)

oh ok, H2O it is,

so im guessing if i just undo a h0se and pop the garden hose in the header tank and wait till it runs clear ?

but which hose is best to undo to get the whole system clean ?
