Back To Standard

After recently buying my 3rd gti, a black phase 1, 1.6, lowered on gmaxx suspension, cammed, 4 branch manifold, 1.9 wheels, 3 months tax and 10 months M.O.T. (Couldn't turn it down for £200, even though the bodywork is crap).

I have now spent some time replacing some of the modified bits with standard bits i happened to have lying around, suspension is standard again, wheels are 1.6, put a carpet back in it, will be replacing the exhaust this weekend for a standard one.

I am amazed at how much better it handles around b roads with the standard suspension, before it felt unbalanced over bumps and the back end felt twitchy, it nowfeels planted and is much more confidence inspiring, well worth the slight loss of handling on boring flat a roads. :(

Suspension develoved for the car in question or cheapo brand 'Stiff and slammed' ebay crap. Not surprising really is it :( Put some decent coilovers on and see what you think then :)

gmax is quite frankly s*it.

My sorrento is getting some Bilstein b4 fronts, xantia b4 rears and some nice eibach pro-kit springs for what I think is the ultimate in 'OE' ride quality.

I realise that cheap underdeveloped stuff is never going to be brilliant, i'm just suprised at how much better the standard setup is, makes you realise just how good a car it is from the factory.

It's true, if you watched Jeremy Clarksons review of the 205 on top gear he says that on the B roads Ferrari's wouldn't come close. I love how mine feels, I'm just running a slightly thicker ARB and some of the later rear dampers, very predictable, and takes a fair bit of stick.

Most of the time lowering a car does more harm than good. Yes there are some gains to be made from lowering the centre of gravity etc, but it all needs to be done in balance with itself, the springs and dampers need to be matched and lowering it too much puts the suspension geometry out too.
