Whats The Best Engine?

Recommended Posts

jonathan205

Hey everyone,

I have just bought an Mi16 205 and personally im gutted..i thought it would be much better than my old carbed 8v but its not, it seems a bit 'all noise, no go' in comparisson..

Just wondering, firstly what do people think to their mi16's and secondly whats the best engine to put in a 205 in terms of lots of reliable power?

Cheers

I think you're best off doing a search as this has been covered a few times before.

But general concensus is the gti6 is the one to have nowadays although the MI is still a firm favourite amongst many.

Yep I'm chuffed with mine, I've had it 6 years and not looked back at an 8v.

Is it running correctly yet?

Perhaps it's worth meeting up with some other members local to you and doing a bit of a comparison.

Yup, love all of mine. Yours may not be performing as well as it should for some reason though?

What engine did you have before? If you're comparing a standard Mi16 to a tuned 1.9 running DCOEs, then realistically, outright power is surely going to be similar.

I would have a look at your cam timing, If its retarded then this will make a lot of noise but not feel like its got any go.

TU24 is my personal favourite, low capacity, low weight, plenty of power with a twin 40 soundtrack a 205 in its rawest form

.......other than that a XU5/9T

Gti6 with a 6 speed box and limited steering imo. To be honest if yours really is that bad then I would say there is something up with it. Did you do the conversion yourself or was it bought already done?

no i bought the car like this..my last 205 was an 8v 1.9 with 45 del auto carbs? and cams and manifold/exhaust..that felt awesome and beat anything i went up against! This car is the standard mi16 but with a filter and full exhaust and it just feels a little sluggish!

For a while its been running really lump, alomost undrivable when it got hot, but then i went to a mate and he played with the air flow meter, and now it runs smooth on idle and all through the revs no matter how hot it gets..but just doesnt feel like 160bhp!

I would love to meet up with you guys to compare, then ill know for sure if mine is how its suppose to be!

What gearbox does it have? An Mi16 on a 1.9 box is not much fun, you need a 1.6 or Mi16 box ideally. Although it should still be fairly rapid once you rev it high enough. What is the power delivery like at the moment? An Mi16 should start to pull hard at about 4500 rpm and then pull more and more until it hits the limiter.

You have to remember. If the engines had a hard life it probably isn't anywhere near 160bhp. Very few engines put out the claimed bhp at standard. Do you know the history of the engine? rebuilds etc..

And just being a little bit cheeky (but relevant to the topic title), I think the best engine would be one which weighs about the same as 4 bags of sugar, required zero maintenance and ran on tap water, delivering 1000 miles per litre (you could run a tiny fuel tank) and 400bhp and 400lb/ft per 200cc displacement.

400bhp is too much. 220-odd max!

From my experince the best car for daily drive its 1.9 8v, for more than that go Mi16 with close ratio gearbox

Thrashing a 205 Mi16 = Big grins all round.....especially when you surprise CTR drivers

Not driven or been in a 205 GTi6 so can't comment. Matt Conys 200bhp TT was hilarious though.
