Are All Intercoolers Created Equal?

Recommended Posts

Looking for a cheap intercooler solution for a 405 turbo lump im buying,

There must be millions of intercoolers from diesels knocking about it scrapyards, would these be any use to me?

Anyone think of any other likley suspects?

thanks

Dan

Intercoolers all have differing rates of efficiency and cooling capacities based on flow rates and surface area. Many OE intercoolers may be sufficient not brilliant at cooling the post turbo air gases.

The size, material and end tanks all come into play, as well as the possibilities available for the siting of the cooler.

The cosworth 2WD and 4WD coolers are a good fit on the 205 as they can be made to fit behind the grill with a little modification, presumably on the 405 space is not so much of a premium.

Basically you need to make sure that the intercooler can flow enough air through to keep up with the displacement from the cylinders. There are many many options out there, but the cossie ones can be picked up for £20-£70 depending on how lucky you get on the bay.
