Help Head Gasket Gone?

alrite lads just brought my first 205 1.6 gti 1988 and it starts and drives but theres blue smoke coming out of the exhaust

i have had a look at the dipstick its clean oil but it is very high its about 1-2cm above maximum.ive took oil filler cap off and theres is a very little bit of custard,not alot mind. it did smell of petrol tho.ive also took the spark plugs out they are black and two of them have wet oil soory to blabber on but could anyone help cheers

If it's blue smoke then it's burning oil, and thus it's more likely stem seals (very common) if it's mostly at idle and on overrun, or worn rings (less common) if it's smoking all the time. Mayo in the oil filler is common due to the rubbish breather design, especially if you mostly do short/gentle trips that doesn't get the oil fully upto temperature.

 

Using significant amounts of coolant, white smoke, low compression one (or two adjacent) cylinders, and a pressurised cooling system are symptoms you'd normally associate with a head gasket fault.

ive just brought it so dont know much but it only smokes when i rev it its ok at idle the bloke i brought it of had drained all coolant out of it because he thought head gasket had gone and didnt want to leave it standing with coolant in is there any checks i can to find out what it is? thanks for your help

1st off, do a good ole search :P far too much info on this site to start a thread like this.

 

So, Have you have driven it without coolant?

 

Oil on spark plug

 

too much oil in sump

 

no history of engine

 

suspected headgasket by previous owner

 

been run without antifreeze

 

try folding down the rear seats to get rid of the smoke.

 

I am guessing you haven't got the foggiest of clues what a falangie is?

 

also bought not brought

well too much oil in the engine isn't gonna help is it !

 

drain it and refill, with a maximum of 4.5litres
