Engine Swop, Can't Get It Running

Recommended Posts

unariciflocos

I put a 1.6 8v in the car because getting the parts for the Mi16 rebuild is taking forever, but doesn't want to fire.

Engine was running when removed from the other car.

Turns over, has spark, has fuel, when I take the plugs out they are wet.

I think the plugs are in the right order 1 3 4 2 with the flywheel at 0 degrees.

Everything seems to be connected properly, got a white wire with a spade coming out of the coil connector that I don't know what to do with and a black connector with two wires coming out of it, a white one and a blue one. The white one goes to the injector earths and the blue one goes to the tachy relay as far as i can see.

The engine turns for 3 4 seconds and then freezes as if i jammed a screwdriver in the flywheel teeth and then tries again. It isn't the battery because I'm using a 130 Amp charger/starter.

I'm in the garage right now so please gents, any advice is welcome.

Thanks,

Andrei

Is it flooding with fuel? I seem to remember if one of the temp sender wires was not on then it the ECU would pump LOADS of fuel in therefore flood the engine. Its a shot in the dark i know!

You checked the engine timing ,but it sounds like you`ve got the igntion timing to advanced if its slowing down during cranking so try retarding it a little

The coolant temp sender is connected, the black plug I connected to the thingy under the thermostat housing that does some recirculation (no idea what it is) and the white wire at the coil is just a live connected in parallel to the main feed of the coil.

Plugs are no longer wet, got the fuel rail out and all the injectors are spraying. I believe the timing to be at 0 degrees and the order is correct. It doesn't stall now, just keeps cranking smoothly and no go. I fiddled gently with the timing but no luck.

I'm fresh out of ideas.

I have no fuel out the return so don't know what fuel pressure I've got in the rail, but this pump ran my Mi16 and the V6 just fine.

Will check the timing belt to see if it is ok, but I have good compression on all cylinders and go over the two connectors under the dash.

Anything else I could try? My guess would be not enough fuel?

try clamping the fuel return line with a set of mole grips see if it makes it any better. Are the plugs ok maybe if you have a spare set try them i had a load of trouble with dodgy plugs even though they sparked doesnt mean it`ll fire believe me

Are you counting the plugs from the right end?

i believe that pugs are the opposite way round, cylinder 1 being closest to the flywheel?

I set the firing order 1 3 4 2 starting from the flywheel. The injector plugs were numbered when removed but don't know from which side they were numbered so tried both left to right and right to left and still no joy.

I ringed the guy I got the engine from and he told me he took off the distributor after he removed the engine from the car to check something so that will be first on the list to change with a known good spare.

If it has compression, fuel and spark it should run! Really don't understand what could be wrong. Thanks for the help so far guys.

I'd say 99% no.

The story with the engine is this, running perfectly, removed from car, stored for a year, owner removed distributor and fiddled with it, sold engine to me, put it in the car and wired it up and now it doesn't start.

I'll whip the rocker cover off to see the actual valves and which cylinder is on the compression stroke, use my own known good distributor and set the firing order again. It HAS to start.

Fuel injector order is not important. Only spark order is.

I have come across cars that have been DIY maintained that require the ignition timing to be 180 deg. out (presumably valve timing is also 180 deg out) may be worth a try swapping leads 1&4 and 2&3

After replacing the ign amp, fuel rail and injectors and coolant temp sensor I traced the problem to a faulty distributor. Fired right up and idled perfectly after changing it for a known good one.

Thank you averyone for your help.
