Unusual Drum Setup

I was on my way to get a new pair of tyres fitted yesterday when i had to stop for a couple of minutes to let cows across the road. Everything was fine before i stopped, when i pulled away again there was a dodgy scrapping noise coming from the back end. Got out and had a look and nothing was obviously wrong so carried on to where i was going. Took the wheel off and removed the rear drum from where the noise apeared to be coming.This is where it gets strange, the drum setup seems to be a spacer with wheel bearing, that is fitted through the drum? Is there any advantage over a normal setup as ive never seen anything like this before? When i removed this the problem became obvious, there was a bolt led in the bottom of the drum, 4 bolts go through the drum and hold the spacer / bearing in place. One of these bolts had dropped out, and 2 were missing completely, so it would appear that since buying and starting to drive the car a month ago (about 1200 miles) one of my rear wheels has only been held on by 2 loose bolts. Good work from a previous owner / mechanic then.

I don't quite understand what you mean

 

A drum braked 205's hub is integral to the drum and is held on by a single 32mm nut.

 

the backplate that the wheel cylinder is attached to and the shoes are secured to is bolter to the trailing arm around the stub axle by 4 bolts.

 

IIRC The bearing in the hub does clamp up against a Spacer.

I will have to put a pictur eup when i can be bothered to take one, it is not the standard drums, the wheel bolts to the spacer, which is bolted to the drum, from the inside, the bearing is part of the spacer, but the drum is a seperate piece. Can't explain it without pictures really.

sounds more like a 306 ABS drum brake setup

Yes it does - I wonder if it has 306 arms fitted as the 306 drum brake setup with the seperate hub type bearings won't fit on the short 205 drum stub axles.

Strange? Would there be any advantage to having this setup on a 205? And is there any way that i can check if this is what it is?

My guess is that the arm shafts were shot and somebody 'fixed' it by putting 306 arms with a good shaft in them into the 205 tube (That is if it turns out that the arms are from a 306!!)

The spacer and bearing do come out of the drum, just forgot to get a picture of the 2 seperate bits.

Not sure what that is to be honest - The 'hub' even looks to have been redrilled.

 

Edit: Ah I see, the extra holes in the hub are to bolt into the drum, whilst the wheel then bolts into the 'normal' holes.

 

Looks like an almighty bodge job, using lots of different mismatched parts. Unless there was a particular reason for doing it, I'd try and get shot asap!

Looks like a home made wheel spacer using a modified drive flange. Never seen anything like it.

Any updates on this? I'd suggest it's dangerous to keep it like that!

I can't hep with your query, but did I noticed you're from Pilton. Don't suppose you owner either a red 205 on 1.6 alloys, or a white one on black 1.9's do you? Just a couple I spotted while down at Glastonbury festival last week.
