Gti To Xu10j2te (406 Sri Turbo) Conversion Help

Recommended Posts

Hi folks

I am currently buying all the extras I need to do the above conversion. I have the poly bushes, engine mounts, MI16 flywheel etc.

I am using the 1.6 GTI box and shafts until ive saved up for the HDI box and 19 shafts and a good paddle clutch. using the 1.6 box and shafts just to run the engine in.

My question is: what clutch can I use on a 1.6 box and MI16 flywheel?

Also, do I need to get a smaller brake servo? looks like the bigger one will get in the road of the turbo/air intake pipes

Thanks in advance

Jamie

You use a mi16 clutch... No the brake servo will be just fine!

My engine hit the servo so I had to fit a smaller one, I believe Pablos did too. You might need to fit a smaller one as I believe space varies quite a bit ;)

Interesting! Both my 2.0 8v turbos clear no problem! one had a lengthend bottem mount (which is a waste of time) the one i have built recently using the standard bottem mount clears quite easily even with the cambelt cover on, as does my mates..

Thanks guys, I wasnt sure if the MI16 clutch would fit inside the 16 box.

Any recommendations for a make/model? As I said, its just to run my engine in and do until I have the HDi box and 19 shafts and a good paddle clutch but still dont want it melting on my first drive ;-)

I seen this clutch while doing a search on the forum recently:

Thanks again

Jamie

The standard mi16 clutch puts up with 200hp or in my case a 2.0 turbo running 1 bar so that would work fine!

Why the HDI gearbox? Might be too long geared even for an 8v turbo, you might be better off with a 1.9 gearbox

Just use the 1.9 box with a 3.59 fd perfectly ideal, the ratios in the hdi box are all over the place (fine for a diesel in a heavier car than a 205), you want to make good use of the torque from that engine youre gonna spend hours fittiing not waste it in a load of wheel spin and useless scrabbling !

if you dont have the engine tilted is it still possible to get the exhaust to line up?

Hi Guys

Little update - I finally got the engine out the 406 and dropped it into the 205 last night. I left the brake servo in but it was in fact in the way and the bottom mount wont line up. Im on the scavenge today for another brake servo - been told both the xs and diesel ones are smaller - any ideas which is best?

I just need a brake servo, some new gear linkages, MI16 thermostat? and it wired up and it should be done.

Dont have much pics yet - here is one from the phone though

Does anyone know if you have to change the thermostat? Heard you needed an mi one but not sure?

I used the standard 8v turbo thermostat in both my 8v turbo conversions, with the 205 turbo I used a 1.9 gti 'box and it was quick off the mark but the ratios were too short, in the 306 turbo I used a 306 1.9 TD 'box and it was perfect for the engine, with my current 16v turbo project I'm sticking with the same TD 'box, but with a better diff!

Thanks mate, i heard someone say you needed an mi thermostat as it had an extra outlet but ill just stick with the standard one if that does!

You shouldnt have to change the sevo the standerd one should fit if its hitting on the big in take pipe just heat it up abit then put a scafold tube on it and give it a tap just to make a nice little dent in it so it curves around the servo save your money. one of the reasons for extending the lower mount is that you dont have such a sharp bend in the exhaust 90 degrees create pressure.
