Home Made Intake Manifold

Recommended Posts

WooDooUK

I am currently looking into making my own intake manifold for a set of bike carbs. XU 8v Head ,Nothing fancy. I am going to be getting a local machine shop to make me a flange from a gasket.

At the moment my only concern is the inlet port shape and how to go from the round carbs to odd shape that is the intake ports.

Does anyone have any ideas or even any pictures of what they have tried?

i did mine by machining out the port holes in my inlet flange to suit the head and then dressed round tubes to the corresponding shape leaving the carb mounting end round .alternative to making your own you could just buy one from bogg brothers .i can take a pic and post it up tomorrow ..mine works very well by the way

heres mine not an xu engine but you get the idea for best results if you are running a map sensor give it an individual port per cylinder and route tham to a little collecter to smooth out the pulses from the individual take offscars071.jpg

Cheers mate.

Im probably not going to curve the runners just for ease of fabrication. (not the best flow results i know)

I have a spare 1.9 GTI inlet manifold (complete) which you can have and chop about if you wish. £20 sent. It includes TB, fuel rail, coil and injectors.

You should do your best to NOT make anything which involves silicon hose joiners, as they are s*it!

I'll tell you how I did my 8v manifold. The same shop that cut my flange also cut a 3 cm thick piece of metal shaped exactly like the port. I used an angle grinder to make a it a bit cone like and then hammered it into the pipe and then hammered the outside of the pipe to catch the exact shape of the piece of metal.

After that I dummy fitted the carbs and the flange and took each piece of pipe and used a sandpaper disk to give the correct angle to each pipe.

Having been there I do advise against fitting bike carbs, they'll pop through the hood if you try and get the float bowls level to the ground and are a pain to get running with the right mixture.
