I thought it may be an idea to use the thread as a diary of how the car goes on between MOTs - sort of 12 months highs and lows of GTi running, if you like.

Firstly, I have found it rather expensive to run as I tend to do short journeys around town etc. so the 1.1 has come back as a daily driver and I use the 1.9 at weekends :).

This week a slave cylinder has blown on the o/s rear, so new cylinders and shoes will be required. This will be fun as I couldn't get the n/s drum off to replace handbrake cable for MOT.

If you can't get the drum off even with a liberal dose of BFI, the trick that I've found is to knock the stub axle out of the middle of the drum - with that removed, the drum then comes off very easily even if there is a big lip that the shoes are caught in :)

Small update- Due to difficult family times the GTi was laid up at Xmas when it lost all it's coolant again :( Now it's back again, taxed from April Fools day no less. Coolant loss was a split in the heater (return?) hose where it clips to the SAD, trimmed a couple of inches from the end and Bob's your uncle !

Today the o/s front brake started to bind horrendously - the advisory perished brake hose, I guess. Maybe don't forget advisories as soon as the ink is dry on the MOT? I've replaced the hose and caliper and all is now fine.

All in all I think the car's doing ok

Radiator sprung a big leak yesterday so needed replacing, also replaced a seal on a leaky injector- was weeping precious petrol. All in all going great for a car of its age :D

I suspect the gasket has been leaking between a waterway and cyl 2 from the first recommissioning which has gradually got worse (hopefully not a liner problem!!!!) Will know more when I strip it,

Gasket had corroded between cylinders 2 & 3. With luck everything will be fine now it's been replaced.....
