Headlight Glass

Recommended Posts

Obey_R

I seem to remember my base model 205 had clips holding the headlight glass onto the unit. Was this an early phase 1 thing or just a bodge job? As the glass has come loose after giving my headlights a thorough cleaning and wondering what's the best way to stick it back on...

Wuld something like Tigerseal do the job or are those clips still availible?

my phase 1 1.6 body has wire clips that hold the entire headlight in place for quick fitting and removal... :s

Dio you mean a spring like thing? That's standard fro all headlights, but I'm talking about just the glass. They do have a small 'lip' on the glass for where a clip might go, but I don't know if I'm just imagining it!

I know the clips you mean, but they only come on some manufacturers not all.

something like Tigerseal I would imagine would work fine, preferably white or clear stuff!

Bathroom silicone sealer seems to work.

Would the silicone stick it very well, as well as making a seal? Obviously it's a bit cheaper than tigerseal!

I used some sort of super glue, I've seen the clips you mean at the scrap yard, I stole them but then they didn't fit onto my existing headlight that well so must have been a different manufacturer (or me being spaz handed).

i think tiger seal is prob better but dont know if you can get it clear and is more expensive, but silicone would be fine. had this on some crapy angle eyes i had...... but tiger seal sticks like sh%t to a blanket!

Hmmmm, I'll probably just get some tigerseal as there's plenty of things I'll need to use it for, no doubt!

oz.

I used panel sealer. Bloody sticky stuff that is. Only downside is that it's black.

They always do it, there's a couple of different types of headlight, some having the clips as you describe, but equally these can also be a PITA as they get in the way of removing/fitting the headlight at times if the gaps are too small between indicator and grille.

I usually just clean up both surfaces and silicone seal them back on, worked fine for me for years. ;)

As much as I am a huge fan of Tiger Seal, we use LOADS of it at work so I have a 'few' tubes in stock in my garage, please dont use it on your lights. It is black and WILL look pish.

Use clear silicone, it is the best for the job as the white stuff will gather mould after time.

I used the white mould resistant type and that was 5 years ago. No mould yet......

I did a pair a while ago with clear silicon, can't fault it. I masked the areas I didn't want silicon going and the finish was spot on. Just make sure you take the masking tape off before the silicon dries.

They were stuck togeather with some low viscosity sealant from the factory and the clips were just an added measure to help them stay on. Unfourtanatly the sealant seems to have about a 10 year half life and the clips allways fall off.

I had a lens fall out as i was pulling in to the pitlane at Combe once, very embarresing as i ran over the bloody thing as well sending shards of glass flying everywhere :D

Another vote here for the clear silicone for sticking them back togeather, just give it a good 24 hours to harden before you remove the tape.

40 quid is a bit more than a couple of quid for some silicone sealant though, and if the headlight/lights are in good condition no rust or reflector damage why buy new ones

+1 silicone sealant works a treat
