Wiring In Driving Spot Lights

Recommended Posts

Guest partz

Hi guys

Ive recently got my mi16 on the road after about 6 months of saving money. Its working well, pulls nicely and arguably im getting better than 40mpg on slow motorway driving. Ive recently solved a couple of minor issues, but Ive got another Id like some advice on [/unimportant intro]

The wires to the driving spot lights (on the lower bumper) have been snipped. Not only that, after taking it to my uni course colleague (another mi fanatic) he couldn't find the socket for the yellow plugs (that have been snipped off) to go into. He said 'I havent a clue whats going on here' or something to that effect...

I was going to wire them onto a separate switch to avoid alot of messing around with connectors. Or if possible just 'add' it to the headlight circuit (is that possible?) I know how to do that, but can anyone tell me what fuse size Id need to include? And should the power supply come straight from the battery or is it best to take it from elsewhere?

Thanks in advance!

I've just rewired mine to allow for the driving lights to have 100W bulbs, although it was easier as I took the switch supply from the existing driving lights.

Each light is going to draw up to 8.5A so you'll need to use cable to cope with that.

Find the live switch supply...I simply cut the live feed from the switch down near the headlamp.

Install a relay, connect the switch supply to this, close to the battery is best.

Take 12v+ feed from the battery and insert a fuse inbetween, I used a 20A fuse, connect to relay.

Ground the relay nearby.

Run cable to each of the lights - make sure you have the correct gauge - I used cable that could handle up to 18A

Earth each light - shorter the cable the better really, use the same gauge cable.

Remember power creates heat, using thin cable will overheat, melt and could cause a fire.

I cut out the yellow plugs this time and connected it all without joins.

Those plugs corrode and can make the lights work intermittently.
