Subframes...

Recommended Posts

My trusty Rallye replica 1.8 Diesel has failed its MOT on a rusty subframe. They can weld it, but will require a few hours work, would be much easier if I could just replace the subframe with a known good one.

So my question is this - does the 1.8 Diesel (1994 Trio model) share a subframe with other Diesels? Other XU engined 205s? Other base models?

If anyone knows anything about this I would be most grateful, will keep the veg oil burner on the road for another year...

rusty subframe?! :)

got a picture of it? its quite unusual for any corrosion to be structural on these subframes.

your subframe afaik would be the same as any base model XU/XUD, as well as the CTi.

Not got a pic, not had it up on ramps myself yet, that will have to wait until the weekend. The MOT garage (who are very trustworthy in my experience) reckon it's too close to the suspension mounting bolts for comfort.

When you say a base model XU - isn't there only one - the 1.6 Automatic? Or is the Gentry the same? And why the CTI, and not the GTI?

Thanks for the quick reply btw!

cti uses base model wishbones, as would the 1.6 carb/spi models.

tu engines also use the base model subframe but the gear post is in a different position

I'm not sure if the mounting point is the same, does it have a single bolt straight into a captive nut or does it have a single large bolt into a mounting attached with two smaller bolts, if it is the same whichever way it is, it would be easy enough to cut the gear post off, relocate is and weld it back on.

The GTi frame should fit but only use the front wishbone point's, This is only a idea as I;ve never tried it but I cannot see why not as the rest of the frame is the same

possibly the easyist option would be to get a tu engine subframe and weld the bracket form the you current subframe onto it because there are so many around

Is the diesel not an XU engine though?

I've found a GTI subframe from Anthony, just need to work what needs doing to make it fit the diesel.

Are you just splitting hairs here? Or is there a fundamental difference between XU and XUD subframes I should know about?

well im not 100 percent sure. but the xu subframe you have is the same as the base model 205s but the mount for gear rods is diffrent. but to remove the bracket from your subframe to an basemodel model subframe would be very simple (measure and weld). tad more difficult going from tu to xu sunframe but wont go into that

There is almost always a 205 D in my local breakers, if I were doing it I'd get the exact replacement subframe and avoid any hassle.

Mine is obviously a bit more upmarket! :) Every time I phone them about 205 bits they ask me if I don't mean a 206, then say "205, haven't had one of them in for years."

That might be do-able as I'm due up to see my parents in Suffolk soon. Will it fit in the back of a 205?

Yep, sounds ideal. Mine is a K reg, so should be a straight swap. How much do you want for it?

How big and heavy would you say it is? I'll have to look at a courier now as my GTI is off the road for a while.

Cheers, submitted the quote to Shiply. Are you able to wrap or box it at all?

I do already have a GTI one waiting for me from Anthony, but would be easier to go with a proper 1.8 diesel one I think.

yes should be able to wrap it up for you ?will a gti one fit your car the front leg mountings differ and the frame would require spacing down .when your car failed the mot what did the failure say was it prescribed area or was it subframe seriously corroded ,only asking cos i have never seen a rotten subframe on a 205 but have failed them on prescribed area ie component mounting
