Hi all,

I was just checking on the production dates for the Gti and realised that the early 1.6's now qualify for the free tax disc.

Anybody on here got one that old that they are running on the great british highway. (legally of course)

Dave

Oh Bugger - I thought it was 25 years old

Dave

It used to be, but the cut-off date was frozen in 1997. So now it's only cars that were 25 years old before 1997 that qualify.

Annoyingly, had they not changed the rules, my 205 would qualify this year. :(

As above... with the addition that nothing will ever become "Vintage". The word refers to wine of a "good year" and if it wasn't a good year when the wine was made then it will never become a good year in future. The word was first applied to anything other than wine in 1934 when the "Vintage Sports Car Club" was founded. The young founder members were concerned that the cars produced during the depression in the 1930's were mostly poor compared with the affluent decade which preceded it. They defined "Vintage Cars" as being made between 1919 and 1931 and they used the winemakers' terminology to indicate their consideration that these were "good years" for car production. After the second world war the club acknowledged that some quality cars were manufactured in the 1930s and these were listed as "post vintage thoroughbreds". I seem to remember during the 1990s that a few motoring journalists were calling for the 1980s to become known as the "second vintage decade".

I'll put my anorak away now

That is very interesting, That has made me wonder, would my 1934 MG N type qualify as a "post vintage thoroughbred"?

It is a shame as my 205 is a D reg!

The Tories were talking about re-instating this, during their pre-election speil, so there may be a chance soon...

considering they give out free tax on new "eco" cars, I don't see why the people who are keeping old cars that were made 20+ years ago should pay tax either

Lol when has tax ever made sense?!

Chances of us getting free tax in the year future = 0.

Yep indeed, as it was labour who stopped it back in 1997.

Several classic car groups have also been pressuring the government to turn this into a rolling 25 years but as yet no movement & tbh I'd be surprised if they did.

I hope the rolling 25 year band will be reinstated but i can't realisticly see it happening, the country is in too much debt for them to allow thousands of pounds in revenue to suddenly stop coming in. Maybe if the government can dig us out of the defecit there will be more of a chance though.
