Engine Cut Out While Driving?

Recommended Posts

Carbs4me

hello all,

Just wondered if you guys have encountered a similar problem.... i was driving around some of the local country roads, i stopped turned around set off just got into 3rd gear, at around 30Mph when all of a sudden the car jumped and no response came from my thottle.. when i pushed the clutch in the engine just died and wouldnt start again, i left it for 10-20mins and tryed to give it another wurl but it would barely idel with my thottle fully open and max revs i could gain was 2,000 RPM. after about 30seconds of having the thottle fully open it slowly creeped upto 3,500RPM which from that point the engine seemed to be completely fine but letting it drop back below 3,500RPM the problem would start again, i tryed to limp it home, but due to lot horses been on the road i had to just leave it...

Currently the car will not start

I personaly think it could be my dizzy? sound familer to you guys?

If it was the ignition amp would it still fuel? because fuel is getting in there from the pump itself..

i have a spare coil pack but no spare ignition amp, is this located on the right hand side of the engine bay?

Clean the AFM with carb cleaner and it'll sort the problem mate i'm fairly sure. Sounds similar to what happened to me last month

Do i spray the carb cleaner inside the AFM? and wipe or just leave it in there?

is it still an 8 valve and what year is it?

Do the rev counter drop stone dead when this happens? or does it follow the revs dying?

yes its still an 8v.. and the reg is F so i think that would make it 89-90?

yes it droped straight down with no hesitation, the engine pretty much cuts out just as quickly as the rev counter drops down... soon as my foot is off the accelorator it cuts out...... it does follow the revs when rolling with the clutch out and in gear...

If the rev counter does follow revs when rolling along in gear, albeit without any power, I'd try another Tachymetric relay as its clear you still have spark, if you did not the rev counter would die straight away (or do a merry dance as they often do when spark faults occur)

If you can replicate the fault check that the fuel pump is getting power.
