Engine Cuts Out.

Recommended Posts

Today has been a good day on the whole,

Car passed its MOT today with the only fault being the headlight beams- too low.

Also she had her 20th birthday on Sunday.

I had my car idling this morning on the drive while giving it a once over before the MOT when i heard it hunt for revs, so i give it a blip on the throttle linkage.

This had no effect at all, tried a couple of blips but nothing the engine was just hunting. Then stopped dead.

Started it back up and all was fine.

After the MOT i went around to my girlfriends, on the way there i had to stop at the traffic lights and the same thing happened-hunting-no throttle response- died.

started straight away and got to my girlfriends.

On the way back home i decided to go for a run in it, going up the gears through the rev range. all was fine no hesitation or missing.

Checked all plugs/connectors on the tachy relay, airflow meter, fuel pump, dizzy, ignition amp. looked secure.

Just wondered if any anyone had experienced this before?

the car is a standard 1990 1.9 gti.

The car has had within the last year a new tachy relay, airflow meter, bosch ignition amp and refurbed dizzy by H&H.

Not that i can rule them out its just that they are not years old suspect units.

Did the garage lean the idle mixture to get it through the emissions test? Sounds like it, if so it just needs richening up a bit and it'll be fine.

The first time it did it was before the Mot.

I'll will have to check with him incase he did alter anything tomorrow as im going take some cakes down for them.

Would that make the throttle unresponsive enough not to be able to save it by blipping it?

Well done! :P You're taking cakes to your MOT tester?

Fuel pump could be on its way out, possibly? Did you say you had intermittent problems with fuel pressure a while back?

Hi Rich,

I was pleased It when through just the beams needed adjusting because I'd fitted new headlights and adjusters.

Just taken the cakes down there and asked if the emissions were adjusted at all. He said that it sailed through.

I did wonder about the fuel pump so I did listen to did yesterday evening,

I haven't had that issue of it needing to be cranked over for a while to fire.

Luckily i have a spare pump ready to go on if need be.

I've just been out in the car a thought I'd feel the tacky relay.

I put my hand through the cubby hole and the relay was hot. Not hot enough that I couldn't keep my hand on it but pretty damn warm.

I came home to remove it, slip the body out through the plastic case. It all looked good no signs of burning or arcing out also couldn't find any dry joins. Wires to the plug/ connector looked ok.

The copper coil was red hot causing the heat To build up.

I also checked the shunt box on the slam panel as I believe it is feed from there- all seems ok.

Bearing in mind the relay is less than 3 months old and is a genuine Peugeot one.

I have now left the relay sat in the cubby hole so I've got quick access to it incase it catches alight as I've seen Damir's post of his relay completely melted.

This could have been the reason for it to mysteriously cut out yesterday twice.

Should it be getting this hot and does anyone know why it would be heating up so much?
