Mi16 Tappet Refurb

Recommended Posts

As topic title really; I intend to refurb a set of 16 Mi lifters as per the guide on PeterT's ever informative website. I was just wondering if anyone in the UK has done theirs, and if so; what degreaser did you use? The product PeterT lists doesnt seem to exist in this country and im finding it hard to track down a suitable equivalent. Any ideas?

Cheers

Sam

P.S. You will probably tell me its something simple and easy to find, but cleaning products arent my specialist subject!

I soaked mine overnight in white spirit and they came apart dead easy.

The active ingredient in the Kenco product PeterT refers to is sodium metisilicate. Not sure where you could locate that from though.

Personally I like toluene as a degreaser, though not readily available I work at a solvent company so easy to source.

But it is the main component in carb cleaner along with acetone, i find this works really well.

Swarfega Jizer, it's available in all Halfords stores and works a treat.

Cheers for all your suggestions guys, i might give the swarfega a try since i work about 1 minute away from Halfrauds.

Ta, Sam.

EDIT: One more thing, how did your respective lifter refurbs go? Noticeable improvement?

I used that jizer stuff on mine and they came up ok. Getting them apart isn't any easier if you soak them in one piece either, you still have to belt them down on something soft a few times to get at their innards.

I used Peter's method for cleaning & re-surfacing. Big improvement in quietness.
