Fabricating Damper Strut Bodies

Recommended Posts

cybernck

i need some proper suspension for my 205 mi16 race car and seeing that bilstein

coilovers from peugeot sport are expensive if you buy a whole pack, i've came to

an idea to fabricate the most expensive part, which are damper strut bodies:

not sure exactly why is it the most expensive single part of the coilover setup,

but they don't look too hard to fabricate at all (not DIY but professionally ofcourse).

what i'd need to know is what's inside the strut body, or is it just hollow? from what

i can see on the pic of the insterts, there only might be a small guide and a hole in

the bottom part of the body:

does anybody know what insides of the strut body look like? SBC should know for

certain so if anybody could ask them, that would be great (unlikely to happen though).

another idea is to get koni adjustable or bilstein sprintline kits and then chop the

spring base off and put a fabricated hollow over-pipe with the thread for the spring

base ring (convert them to height-adjustable).

if anyone have any information or ideas that can help, please post here.

thanks.

I don't know what the inside is like but I assume it will be a seamless tube you'll need to buy for strength, surely it'll just be caped off at the bottom with a hole to collect the insert stud and nut at the bottom, what you really need is the thickness and dimensions of the outer strut body as shown.

to fabricate that it, it would cost alot less than £100! thats for the outer body. It looks like a tube of aliminium / stainless steel with a threaded arm.

really need dimensions and maximum tolerences, to estimate a price.

Id say no more than £100 for 2 (if you supplied the materials)

The strut bodies have a seal in the top to stop water and dirt ingress. The bottom has a threaded hole to attach the insert. Other than that it is a plain tube of steel with a zinc coating.

However I can supply you a full set of coil-over adjustable suspension with springs for £350. If you are interested get in touch and I'll send you some pics.

You are right Kev

I forgot about the bushes. From memory I think they are bronze about 2" long?

Obviously they have a slightly larger ID than the OD of the insert body.
