Has Anyone Done An Engine Conversion In A Gti With A Cat?

Recommended Posts

monkee87

I've got an L reg GTi and i was thinking about doing a GTi6 conversion. How do you get past the emissions test as the MOTer will test it for a catalytic converter surely as it'll be listed as having one..?

Has anyone done a conversion in a late car? Do you just try and blag it as a non cat car? I know that if i do the 6 conversion it won't have a cat on it..

Does that make sense to any of you?

My L plate CTI needs a cat for the emissions. Yours will too with a GTI6 engine as both the car and new engine came with cat

Just fit a cat when you do the conversion, simple

Caveat: I've not done one myself...

But, how can it be much harder than a 'non cat' conversion? You're still running a lambda sensor for the ECU anyway, it's just a question of plumbing the cat into the exhaust system. Bit more of a PITA there but not insurmountable by any means if you're willing to have a crack at an engine convo!

Do you leave your CAT on all the time then henry? Doesn't it not take power away? I know the 6 lump comes with a CAT, so when you put it in a 205 without the CAT, doesn't it give it more power as it's got less restriction?

I'm sure i could possibly blag it as a non CAT car thought as the guy who MOT's my car is an acquaintance of mine. :D

It's easy to fit a CAT to the 6 engine in the 205, either weld the 306 CAT in or use a aftermarket one of suitable size.

Yes you could try and fool the odd MOT tester but if they have there head screwed on they will know your trying one on.

I;ve never seen any real results from De-cating a 306 so I cannot see it making a huge differance anyway

I leave my cat on all the time. Yes I could get a little bit more power without it but it does save a load of hassle come MOT time.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I don't mind having a CAT on the car, just wondered what others had done.

I may be on the look out for a GTi6 engine soon then. Miles, do you do discount on modified engine looms and exhaust manifolds to members?

Looms are really done to suit each car as I route them in under the expansion bottle and without making the hole larger you cannot get the brown multi plugs thru the bulkhead, I don;t like using the orginal hole as its too close to the exhaust, even 8v's get hot there.

Manifolds I can sort out, but need yours to mod

seems a shame to convert a late car like that, is this the one with the plastic inlet manifold fitted?

Can't be many original L reg cars about today. Is it in poor health?

It's only just an L reg, so it doesn't have a plastic inlet manifold. It is running motronic injection though as it has a cat. The whole car is a bit of a mess, it's been owned by a bit of a numpty. I want to take the engine out anyway as the wiring in the bay is a mess... Just considered a conversion as all the gti's I've had have all been original. wanted something a little different really.

best do a good job of it then :P:lol:

I have a query on a similar Subject, a 92 K registered ZX 16v, originally built with a cat as its the RFY engine from the factory, but sold pre-CAT rules which came into force in 93.

Its also running a non-original engine, albeit a later one, can this be put through as a non-cat vehicle?

I know there were 1.9 non cat ZX's in 92, and a friend had a K-plate Subaru Legacy Turbo that went through MOT'd with the cat removed just fine (no funny business either before you ask!) can I get through with my Decat pipe?

the emission are done on the "year" so if it has a cat but is pre cat year car then take it off and it should pass fine as the emssions would be tested the same as if a car didnt have a cat???? someone my correct me tho!

205 motronic does, same AFM as the 1.9 MI16.

Really??? My AFM looks identical to the normal jetronic one... ECU deffo has motronic on it though.

might well look the same (as does one off a cav, many BMW's, alfa's fiats etc etc.....)

Check the part number, IIRC it should end in 202 if its a motronic one, not 056 or 109 which are Jetronic.

I have a GTi6 fitted into my late model "L" reg 205 1.9 GTi (when original). As said by others a shape to change a late model, but alas the oil pump had died on my original engine and the engine needed replacing. Hence the GTi6. I've got a stainless steel sports / high flowing cat on my car and it flew through the MOT as a standard GTi6.

However this years its got throttle bodies on as well and mapped ECU and with the CAT on it still passes - just. ^_^
