205 Gti 1.9 Project

Hi everyone. I have just bought a 205 1.9 GTI as a project. It is a really good example but like most 205's it has its problems. Without going over old ground the major one is getting the car to idle properly. I have replaced the spark plugs, HT leads, oil, oil filter, air filter and cleaned the connections on the coil but I still have one lumpy engine! I'm thinking a new fuel filter and coil but to save me from throwing money away I need some advice. One thing I have noticed is that there is no consistency to tickover. I can get the car to full temperature and its ticking over too low, adjust the tickover so its fine and turn it off but 5 minutes later it ticks over too low again. To me its pointing towards the idle control valve but I really haven't got a clue. Any help would be appreciated and taken on board.

They did this from new pretty much but a worn AFM can make the situation worse.

The spring inside wekens and the flap flaps around causing mixture variations and dodgy idle.

Some stuff on the main site about this.

Thanks for your reply mate. I will try and pick up a used AFM, i'm also going to replace the Idle Control Valve as they seem to be problematic, then get the car properly tuned up and see where I go from there. I am currently having trouble with a wheel bearing of all things. One of the Techies at work has replaced the bearing but the wheel still has masses of play in it which we suspect is the Hub worn out due to the play in the bearing. I had a 1.6 GTI 12 years go and never had these problems but then that was 12 years ago! All good fun!!!
