Go-karts

Recommended Posts

Just been talking with a guy a work and he swears blind that you can get go-karts that do over 200mph. Is this correct ?

I wouldn't have thought you'd be able to keep them on the deck before modding them so much you'd have a f1 car.

I've done a quick search and only found claims of around 160mph absolute tops, so is this just a load of pony or do they have karts this quick ?

maybe if you put a turbo'd motorbike engine on one. Fastest race series I know of is the superkarts, which get up to 150 or so.

although probably possible, I certainly wouldn't want to drive one

edit: although I suppose its no more dangerous at that speed than a crotch rocket

I'm not sure, in a kart you're more like to get airborne than on a bike? I have seem big winged karts with bodies though, maybe they're the ones that do 150, but just cna't see any doing 200 not from a series anyway.

Found on wiki;

Powered by a 2-stroke 250 cc engine producing 95 hp (71 kW) for an overall weight including the driver of 215 kilograms, Superkarts have a power/weight ratio of 440 hp/tonne (330 W/kg)(c.5 lbs/hp). Superkarts can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h)[4]. Their low weight and good downforce make for staggering cornering[5] and braking abilities[6]. A Superkart is capable of braking from 100 mph (160 km/h) to standstill in around 2 seconds, and taking corners at nearly 3 g (30 m/s²)[7].

At some circuits, Superkarts are the outright lap-record holders[8], at others they run at around Formula 3 lap times.[citation needed]

British Superkart Divisions :

Division 1 is open to 250 cc karts with one or two cylinders and five or six speed gearboxes. Typically the karts produce 90 hp and are capable of 160 mph - the fastest form of kart. This formula was previously known as Formula E.

Division 2 is for single cylinder karts with 5 and 6-speed boxes. Typically these karts produce 65 hp and are capable of 140 mph. However, being lighter than the twin cylinder (Division 1) karts they can be as quick on twisted circuits. This formula was previously known as 250 International. However the main British series is for single cylinder 250 cc karts with 5-speed only, also known as 250 National.

125 Open - Powered by 125 cc engines and again featuring 6-speed sequential gearboxes, this class uses lighter chassis than the 250's

160mph sounds like plenty to me in a kart!! Not sure how stable under braking they would be at that speed, but I supposed those kind won't just have a single rear disc like your average 40mph indoor kart :) 200mph is probably possible by putting in a current superbike powerplant, or basically enough power but I bet it'd be a bit dodge.

The biggest problem when driving Karts in excess of 200 MPH is of course the trouser snake, at over 5 foot long it tends to rest on the brake pedal. :)

Cool :) wiki doesn't work here on my work pc so some handy info.

In regards to the superbike theory, surely the tire size makes a difference to reaching those speeds ?

:D

I wonder how long you'd have to make it to be kinda controllable. Such a small thing RWD is so easy to spin.

Our Formula Student car has around 450bhp / ton, if you removed the 20mm inlet restrictor it would be twice that!

Maybe he's thinking of scale speed. In other words, if it was scaled up to the size of a car, and the speed scaled up by the same ratio, it would be over 200mph. But then again, by that token surely it would be something stupid like 600mph

I very much doubt you`ll see 200mph unless its like the above .I had a 100cc kart nothing fancy that did around 120mph give or take a few mph speedo wasnt great. But it was a nightmare to start we had to towe it 50mph to bump it

no way you could get 120 out of 100cc unless it was crazy race tuned and engine would only last one event

my mates gsxr 600 go kart only does 20 30 mph more sure it wasnt in km

no mate it was against a mates calibra side by side thats what it stopped at like i said give or take a few mph it was really quick i think it was a rotax or rotrax two stroke engine .

the 250cc pro carts do about 150 mph if not more .Alot of it was down to gearing hence why mine was a pig to start but it was sh*t low down wich took alot of the fun out of it

or

a mechanic at the local tyre place claimed he had driven round the m25 in a turbo 205 in twenty minutes... did a quick sum in my head... 100 miles, 20 mins... bs

180mph not that dibeliveble

Oh and mine was direct drive so no gears .You could probably get a bike pwered one to do 200mph but would have to gear it stupidly high and would probably have to give it a rolling start to get it moving

Abit off topic seen a few trikes that have been ford v6s wich have been direct drive due to keeping them short a bet they would be fast

Think your maths is wrong there mate.

100 miles in 20mins, would mean 300 miles in 60mins

i.e. 300mph

So guess I can put this in the pony & trap pile along with his claims of being able to remember being born :D
