1.6 Drums

I’m looking for some drum experts!

One of the cylinders has gone and the shoes could do with replacing so I’m trying to figure out what to buy.

It seems from the Porter’s manual that there are 3 types? Bendix, Girling and Lucas. I definitely don’t have Girling stuff. My cylinders are Lucas but GSF seem to only list Girling cylinders for the Gti, are these interchangeable? The diagrams appear very similar in Porter’s.

Again with shoes only Bendix and Girling are listed in GSF? ECP don’t seem to list anything for the Gti?

Are the back plates for all three the same?

Are the drums for all three the same?

Lucas and girling are the same make (Lucas Girling) if this helps?

Good question as Bendix, Girling, Lucas all make the parts for these just to confuse matters, But you want the std non compensated slave cylinder,

The GTi & Gentry use the widest Shoe, the base models use a slimmer shoe with a compensator built into the slave cylinder

Thanks for the replies. Why couldn't they just use the one type.

Miles, how do I tell a non compensated slave cylinder from a compensated one?

Don't suppose anyone knows if the drums and backplates are the same?

The non-compensated wheel cylinders have an M10 (10mm spanner) brake pipe union into the back of them & fit into a round hole in the back plate.

Those with a built in compensator usually have an M12 union (13mm spanner) & the back plate hole is oval.

You can also get Bendix rear shoes in 40mm wide.

A 205 1.6 GTI ought to have Girling rear drums as said but some 1.6 autos have Bendix with 40mm wide shoes.

Graham.

if its a gti you need the 40mm wide drums and shoes, the 1.6 gti used "girling" system on the rear, with the Bendix sliding calliper on the front, 1.9's as wel all know the opposite, Girling front and bendix rear

If a replacement part was sourced from Lucas it'd be stamped Lucas, though Bendix don't do one that fits.

If a customer calls for wheel cylinders and you get a choice of either Bosch/Bendix or Lucas (mainly on french cars) there is an easy way to tell the difference. If you cant work it out by the catalogues you can just ask the garage to look behind the wheel and see what shape hole is in the backing plate of the drum. This is correct about 90% of the time.

had this email at my work, maybe of some use

OK thanks for all that. I'll go to the factors tomorrow. If they eventally turn out to be the correct parts I'll post up the part numbers.

from the GSF website;

654PC0380 WHEEL CYLINDER 205 GTi & TD GIRLING SYS £12.75

all the other 205 wheel cylinders listed are £2 more at £14.75.

631PC0280 BRAKE SHOE SET-REAR 205 1.6 GTi GIRLING £15.40

£3 cheaper than non gti girling.

oddly no drums listed on the website from them, that's not to say they don't do them though.

very large bump i know but saves opening another thread topic, i need two new rear wheel cylinders for my '90 205 gti 1.6 should my cylinders be 19mm bore or 20.6mm? following the GSF part number above gives the 19mm but the ones listed on euro car parts also show a 20.6

thanks
