Gti6 Compression Test Results

Recommended Posts

Paul_13

Did a compression test today, engine was warm and throttle WOT etc.

It's a GTI6 engine 96 reg I think, enlarged throttle body aswell but don't think that would make a difference.

And these are the results:

175 Piston nearest cambelt

165

165

180

I think something is up or am I hyping up about nothing?

I know you have a 10%ish margin between results.

Thoughts?

Just seen this :D

Really should of skimmed this head before I put it on.

Would the head going last time screw things up (2 headbolts completely loose and 2 rounded off and the other weren't exactly mega tight) There was water in the cylinder when I took the head off after I had smashed it with a hammer

I was told by rich_w on the 306 forum that i should be getting around the 225 psi so by the looks of it they do look a little on the low side. I did put a little oil around the compression seal just so it works better. Read the compression instructions thoroughly because there is a few tests to see if the problem could be either a head gasket, valve-seals and piston-rings etc ok mate ?

Cheers for that George, dammit bit annoying.

It goes all right when it gets on song, but really does feel like it's not fully putting power down.

Looks like an excuse for another engine and rebuild this one with another crank.

What made you do the test? As you say, as long as they are all in a reasonable tolerance of each other and the engine runs and drives well, I wouldn't think much of it. You do get s*ite and badly calibrated gauges.

My mate had a compression tester, just thought I'd give it a go considering the history of my engine.

I think somethings wrong somewhere, possibly guage. It was playing up slightly on my mates car.
