Not Another Wheel Bearing ?!

Recommended Posts

Evening all,

Right - when I bought the car (November last year) I had all manner of odd noises from the front end; replaced both driveshafts, both wheelbearings and both strut top mounts over a period of a couple of weeks. Got it tracked, and all was good.

A month or so ago, I replaced the lower engine mount (the one on the big bracket / plate - not the forked one) complete with a Gp N one - obviously involved moving the strut to one side and disconnecting the track arm to pull the shaft out of the gearbox..

All went back together ok and quite pleased with the result. So, since then, at anything approaching motorway speeds (around the 70 -75mph mark) the steering shook like the tracking was out - unsurprising, really, as I'd disturbed it. Thought to myself "I really ought to go back to the alignment place and get them to check that" and being a class-A Twat, never did.

So, fast forward to this week - spinning down the motorway, and heard a rumbling noise - hey presto, the shaking at speed had gone ! Only to be replaced by this rather ominous hum that's getting louder. ;)

Jacked the little witch up last night and had a good ol' play and rattle to see if I could tell if the bearing was shot. grabbed either side of the wheel (front and back) and tried to detect any play. If there's any movement at all, it's in the pass side wheel - didn't even go NEAR that when I did the mount !!

SO - after all of that, could I please have your advice on if it's time to replace another bearing, or could I be looking at a diff ? The noise is constant, gets louder (a bit - the mani's blowing so it's difficult to tell !) and doesn't go away when I depress the clutch. There's no significant difference if I turn left or right either.

Thing is, I'm not overly keen to replace BOTH bearings (again) and am a bit of loss as to which one, if any, to start with; I moved/disturbed the o/s, but there seems to be a LITTLE play in the n/s ??!! Maybe it's nothing to do with the bearings at all ?? Anywhere else I should look ?

The n/s bearing was from Halfrauds (I know, but I was desperate - be easy on me; it was a Sunday !) and the other (o/side)was from Autofive.

Thanks as always.

(Oh, Ph1.5 GTi 1.6, 1990 XU5JA and BE3; no ABS and no p'steering - sorry, always forget that bit)

Anyone ?!

Thought that the bearings were gone, so stripped both sides off this weekend ready to replace but they seem fine with little discernable movement. Replaced the bottom engine mount/plate with an OEM one from the main stealer while I was down there; tighened and torqued everything up correctly, took it out for a fuel stop and the noise is still there !! :):)

I thought that if CV joints went, there was a knocking on hard lock; is this the only sign, does anyone know ?

If it's the inboard end, would it still knock ?

Any ideas ?

Anyone ?

Please ?!

I'm not driving the car at present as I'm worried I'm doing even more damage, but without finding out what to replace my love affair with Peugeot is going to be short-lived !

Thanks guys . . . . .

I kept getting "failed" wheel bearings, I changed the driveshaft and it fixed it.

Anthony

In my experience, inner CV failure tends to give some horrible vibration, particularly at higher speed and under acceleration

Could be the intermediate driveshaft bearing that's failed? That can give a rumbling/whirring sound, and would figure with you having disturbed it when replacing the lower engine mount.

Wheel bearings failing tend to get louder turning one way, and quieter turning the other, as you load and unload them. If it's not doing this, and there's no play, I'd be dubious that it's a wheel bearing.
