Annoying Sound When Cornering Right...

Recommended Posts

Vz_ace

Hello everybody!

Since I swaped 1.6 engine with 1.9 in my 205 gti, the car started to emit funny noises when i'm cornering right. The gearbox and axles&stuff stayed from 1.6.At driving straight or cornering left, there are no problems. The noise is similar to: R-R-R-R-rrr, if you get it. I renewed the transmission oil too. The oil capacity is 2l isnt't it? I replaced the left front wheel bearing. The sound is still present.

Before the engine swap, there was not any sound like this.

Any ideas, masters;)? could it be ball-joint?

regards,

V.Zaloznik

The new front wheel bearing sounds the biggest suspect, or something that came apart while you was doing it. I doubt the engine itself is to blame. Does the sound speed up or slow down with road speed or engine speed?

Also check engine mounts as i had a similar problem when the offside engine mount wore. Noise was vibration due to excessive engine movement.

@brumster: the sound definately depends on driving speed. The engine speed does not influence on.

@dan gti6: where is that offside engine mount? maybe it really causes those problems.

i allready thought about, that because of excessive engine movement, the driving axle and transmission get to much force....

Check the pinch bolt is seated properly in the bottom of the track control arm. If you have pinched it higher than the groove it can make some funny noises. If the pinch bolt was particularly hard to force through the hub then that is what you will have done.

look, the sound depends on the driving speed, but it doesn't depend on in which gear i drive. the sound is similar to braking with corroded discs....only when i corner right.?

so- the pinch i think is not the reason.

So the sound is more like a grinding/rubbing? sound rather than a knocking?

If it is it sounds to me like a wheel bearing.

its more like rubbing with slight knocking, and everything is a function of a driving speed, as i alreaddy said. if i corner hardly right, that sound enhances.

I replaced the left wheel bearing, and nothing better.

could it be the differential or transmission?

i noticed in the mean time, that the left tie rod has quite much of play. ..

Are either of the front tyres rubbing on the body work?

nope, thats for sure.

I must add that I fit 1.6 flywheel to 1.9. I also changed gearbox oil. What is the gb oil capacity actually? 2l?

Just as something else to check - the exhaust *might* have moved position slightly during the engine conversion. Then when you corner one way the exhaust moves fractionally, but enough to rub/knock up against something.

Sounds a crazy suggestion I know, but I had it on my FTO after a few years and it turned out one of the exhaust hangers had moved slightly over time and then when I cornered hard to the right it was making the exhaust move fractionally over so it rubbed / knocked on something else under the car.

that is not silly idea at all. i had similar problem once in the past. But now, i alreaddy checked that and i didn't see any issues with exaust....

Thats the thing though - my garage looked at my FTO for a while and checked the exhaust too and it seemed fine when it was static. It was only when it was driven hard around a right hand corner the suspension was dipping on the left (due to the weight transfer to the left side wheels on a right hand corner) and this allowed the exhaust to then knock on something. Took them a while to trace that down. :)

I know the sound you mean. My 205 is doing the same. Only when i give it some stick when cornering to the right. Its like a dull thudding noise. Almost a bass type thudding?

I've replaced my droplinks and my front suspension and shocks and its still doing it. Turning left is fine. I stripped the wishbone yesterday off the car and the bushes are mint.

I'm starting to wonder if its the gearbox mount or a drive shaft but i cant keep replacing things as its costing a fortune

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hardcharging

Sounds to me like the metal guard that fits between the ball joint and the hub ,rubbing on the disc .

I have the same noise from my 309 and will be removeing the guards tomorrow !

Intermediate bearing on the longer driveshaft?

I've had an intermediate bearing rumble and it wasn't affected by cornering, just made my ears hurt at low revs+wide throttle :)
