Another Idle Problem...

Recommended Posts

Marshall

Apologies if this has been covered, search didn't bring any answers up for me.

Basically I seem to have an idle problem when the engine is hot, as in it won't idle at all. Car fires up fine and idles well from cold to warm, however once the engine gets up to temp it just refuses to idle, and trying to heel & toe with a sprained ankle when approaching junctions is starting to become a proper ball ache.

Now I'm not sure if this will affect it or not (I think probably will) but when I bought the car it didn't have the ducting that goes from the front of the car to the air filter (as shown in the pic below) so it'd only be sucking in hot air. I've temporarily put some pipe there for now but the diameter is way too big and stops at the back of the rad. Would I be correct in thinking that the hot air into the air filter will be the issue? Also, anyone know where I can get all the bits from the air filter forward?

It's more than likely just a general setup issue that's been covered many times before indepth as it's VERY common on GTi's

That's the thing, did a search for hot+idle+problem and all I got back was results for cold idling problems.... :D

Adjust the idle speed to approximately 1000rpm no-load (so 800-900rpm with electrics all on) and the exhaust CO to ~1% CO. Check for air leaks and clean out the throttle body and breather system, and chances are that it'll be fine.
