Finding A Power Drain

Recommended Posts

ORB

Hello people.

Sparks is not my strong point and I was wondering if you could advise on finding my power drain.

I am getting a flat battery in about 2 days and I know it is a strong battery.

I guess it must be suffering a power drain somewhere but I have no Idea how to look for the problem!

Thanks

Disconnect one terminal of the battery, connect a multimeter set to read the largest amp scale between the battery and the terminal. Read off the amps, this is your drain.

Then one by one pull the fuses from the fuse box, watch for the amps to drop to zero, or significantly decrease. This is the circuit which is draining your battery, you will then have to dig out the wiring diagram in the Haynes and see if you can determine what it the problem.

Only exception to this is anything not wired through the fuseboard- so check carefully anything such as aftermarket alarm, stereo if not using standard wiring, etc.

2 quick things to check before getting the meter out is the boot and glove box lights are going out.

When fitting my alarm I noticed that after I'd finally connected it to the interior door switches I started getting false triggers.

It turned out that the door switches were corroded and thus not making a good contact and so the interior light was sort of staying on albeit dimly but for extended periods.

I replaced both the switches and all sorted.
