Throttle Bodies

Recommended Posts

I've got an Mi 16 converted 205gti. Not sure weather to take the plunge and invest in throttle bodies. Am i really going to get a big performance boost or are they just more for noise and show? :)

depends on how much inlet cam you run... without cams - 15 ish bhp, with a reasonable duration cam, more like 35

Definitely worth it allllll day, even just for the noise. :)

Yeah do it, it opens the door for so many more modifications down the line. :)

As said above, on their own on a standard engine you will not see a huge power increase. My mate and I gained about 10bhp and a bit more torque. However as a combination of mods such as camshafts and increased compression, they certainly do the business.

For me it was never about the standard engine and I lusted after carbs. Long story of 'whey back thens' but my 309 made massive power on its mi carb engine conversion and home made 3 inch down pipe manifold..

If there is something you want to do in life then just go for it and read and trawl all you can!!!

If you can not be bothered to surf in this day and age then do not bother doing the conversion.... think about us poor souls that did not have the luxury of google 20 years ago :)

I think if you plan on investing in upgrades over time, then they're the big expense that paves the way for better things. If you're just planning on putting bodies on the standard engine and that's it, then it's a lot of expense for what is ultimately a few bhp, better driveability and (depending upon your standard management) economy. Once you factor in bodies, management, manifold, loom, regulator and mapping you can be looking at £2k pretty easily with everything brand new. But, if you plan on squeezing every last bit of oomph out of your mi, they'll open the doors to better things.

And then there's the sound of course... first time I heard my car for myself (on it's new engine) was a few weeks back

(fast forward to 1:30ish).... like Baz says, maybe worth the money alone :D !

I'm nearly there with the TB's it's the way forward.

I'm running

different cams

Emerald management

Logical next step is the TB's.

It's quite an expense, but I'm already at 25bhp over standard so with TB's we're looking at 200bhp.

On a standard engine the midrange is massively improved

I'm going to sit on the other side of the fence on this one I think, and say that for an otherwise standardish road-going 205 Mi16, converting to throttle bodies represents incredably poor value for money for the performance and aural improvements that you get </contraversial>

It has to be done well. You can't simply kib on any old set up and expect it to work. A well chosen and tuned set up is considerably better than one that isn't. Good mapping as important.

Think I'm going to bite the bullet and get out the mastercard. Anyone recommend anywhere to go to get a good job done with the maximum bang for my bucks?

North west ideal, But for a good job I'd travel.

The one thing I always wonder about throttle bodies is how they actually cope with day to day driving? I apreciate this is mostly down to mapping but could you reasonably expect oem style idle stability and general manners or are we talking jetronic on a bad day....

if mapped properly you're talking MAP based Motronic on a good day.

I did 30k in my 309 mi on 45's with no filters on and a dizzy conversion using home made crimped HT leads and halfords cap and rotor arm-good power, good driveability and mega noise

Got fuel, got spark and got some kind of control from 8v ecu--not the best but made very very good power!

In all fairness, the cams contribute to the tone of the induction bark too... just will say that so you don't expect your car to sound quite the same! That's 8200rpm and some rorty cams for you
