Windscreen Crack/replacement

Recommended Posts

JIM89

Hi,

I've got a cracked windscreen and need to know the best way of replacing it.

Is it possible to do it myself, or do i get a professional to do it?

It happened when I was was rushing to put up my degree show at uni and loaded the car up with a long shelf covered in rags both ends...resting it on the dash it just fit in diagonally and had flex in the structure so when slowly shutting the boot I didn't think it was a problem, but when it did click shut I saw the screen and had a heart attack! :P

The shelf must of moved when it shut and put pressure on the screen. Silly silly mistake, but need to know what you would recommend to replace the screen as soon as poss...

All help would be appreciated,

Thanks,

James

p.s hope Alex doesn't see this...sorry mate !

easy to do yourself mate.

just get mate and sit in the front seats and push out with your feet it will come out easily. retain the seal and fit a new screen using strong string or wire in the bead to pull the seal round the window frame.

should be on the search somewhere.

They aren't too hard to do. I would recommend putting in a new windscreen seal as well if it hasn't had one in years. They can leak. A smear of fairy liquid or some silicone spray if you have it, helps the rubber go in alot easier and less risk of marking/tearing the seal with insulated wire/string. If you haven't got the proper string tool, i'd recommend a roll of insulated wire instead as some string can break easily and you will get frustrated when it does when the screen is almost in!

Cheers lads,

I thought it may be a string & pull job but i know later pugs have that nasty sealant stuff holding it in.

Next question! Where best to gain a windscreen? I've search ebay and can't find any...

Would you know anywhere that may be of help? and are all 205 screens the same?

Thanks alot!

James

that is exactly it, i used the insides of some 2.5mm twin and earth cable and it worked a treat.

There are 3 types from what I know. Clear - base models, bronze tint -all gti's and bronze tint with blue haze at the top [similar to the way some vauxhaul astra screens used to be]

I couldn't get a bronze tint one when I was after one here in N. Ireland earlier this year so went for the one with the blue haze. It's the dearer of the 3. A local windscreen company should be able to sort you out no problem.

I had those wiper arms and the sump powder coated about 5 years ago. I think it's accelerated the corrosion a little when it blisters.

I had the sump rust through on me last year and had to fit a brand new one.
