Alternator Wiring

Recommended Posts

fliprio

I have had a few problems with my battery charging light flickering on and off the past few weeks, the alternator terminal looks a bit corroded, so I gave it a good wire brushing. While I was doing it I noticed that the small ring terminal next to the main large one didn’t have a wire going to it.

There is a loose bare ended brown wire in close proximity to it, is this supposed to join up to the smaller ring terminal? It’s on a GTi-6 conversion and I my Haynes manual is still in the post to look at wire diagram colours.

The battery light doesn’t come on when first turning the ignition on (I can’t remember if it had or not before!) and now doesn’t flicker.

Anyone got any ideas if the brown wire is supposed to be connected, or is there no connection to the small terminal on a GTi-6 conversion?

The smaller terminal on the alternator should connect to the warning lamp on the dash. If left unconnected it wont charge the battery.

cheers ade 4wd, I suppose if it has been flickering on and off before then it must have been that wire, because it isnt connected to anything at the moment.

The wire for the light will be on a spade connection. The + is the only ring connection bolted on.

Not always, sometimes the signal wire is on a ring terminal with a small stud/nut fastening.

it was a small ring connector with a small stud/nut, I resoldered the wire and all seems to be working, and no flickering battery dash light for the moment :)

Didn't know this. Was this on earlier models or what. I've never had that on any of mine which were from 1990 to 95

I think you missed the part in the first post that said he has a GTI6 engine, therefor a GTI6 alternator.
