Weather Tight Connectors

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to remove the wires and their connectors from one of the weathertight connectors, say the one for the AFM? I'd like to get the wire and those little connectors at the end of the wire out intact so I could swap it to another weather tight connector.

The connector to my AFM has two damaged wires, pretty much right by the connector itself, and I'd like to get these out and replace them with intact wires and connectors. Unfortunately, the two spare weathertight AFM connectors I have both have bent or damaged pins or wires, so it doesn't make sense trying to swap the entire connector.

Or is soldering the wires in the connector my only choice?

Once you know how to do it, it's a piece of piss. And on that basis, I hate it when people recommend chopping off connectors from donor looms, leaving a couple of inches of tail and then re-soldering on to the new loom (are you listening Dr Sarty? :P ). If you have a search through my old topics, I made one which goes in to detail and shows photos of how to open up and remove the terminals from most of the Pug loom connectors.

However, in summary, what you is peel back the rubber boot. Then you get something very thin and flat (I bought a set of proper terminal release tools, which in hindsight was not needed as you can release the terminals with anything suitably flat and thin enough to get in the hole. You need to enter via the front (oh err! :P ). The hole is T shaped, and you need to poke the tool in to the base of the T. What this will do is bend back the tag on the terminal, which allows you to pull the wire and terminal back out of the plug. It may take a bit of playing around to get the tag to bend in enough to withdraw it.

EDIT: My browser is being a cock so I'm going to log back in on IE8 and try to upload pics

Wonderful! I had done a search for weather tight connector but nothing turned up. I had tried a tiny precision screwdriver, but it was too thick. I ended up bending one of the connectors on on of my spare connectors. Will see if I can find terminal release tools....Don't think i've got anything flat enough here, unless I take apart a spare dash instruments connector, unfold one of the terminals and see if it will fit in the little hole.

Cheers.

A straightened paper clip should be perfectly adequate :P

Yup. It was....the screwdriver I had tried before must've been too thick or something. Thanks. Replaced the damaged wires to my AFM.
