Gti6 Intermittent High Idle ~ 3.5k Rpm

Recommended Posts

Problem appears completely at random. Sometimes it will start idling high from start up, then other times may not happen until after 30mins of driving.

From doing a search the symptoms seem similar to those with TPS and ICV problems but what's causing some confusion is regarding problem only arising at random, so what do you all reckon?

For what it's worth, my experience of GTi-6's is that you can unplug the TPS and it has no significant effect regarding idling or normal driving - thus I wouldn't expect the TPS to be behind the high idle.

Thats the revs mine was idling it when I first did conversion :)

Worked out in the end I had no voltage to the ICV,I had a 12v live missing from the big relay near the ECU,this was not feeding the part of ECU that sent voltage to ICV :D

So could be worth trying another relay :P

But did yours rev that high all of the time or just at random?

I've got the same problem with my GTI-6! The idle is all over the place. It can be idling up at 4000rpm, so I switch off and start again and problem solved... well, sometimes... not always! Really gets on my nerves.

Anyway, sorry no advice from me... but please, please post the solution when you get one! By the way, I've no idea what those abreviations above mean, so I'll leave the tinkering to you!

Mine was like it all the time, cause live was missing

But thinking yours could be down to relay sticking/playing up etc,so intermitant fault :)

Next time its doing the high idle remove the plug from ICV and see if you have 12v at the plug,if not you need to look at relay/ECU etc,

but if you have 12v at the ICV plug and its still got high idle get another ICV

There fitted to quite a few 16v petrol Pugs/Citroens,go to local scrappy, mine charges £3 for them B)

Fitted a brand new ICV (5 min job), went for a drive and problem solved! So much more enjoyable to drive and also not sitting at traffic lights whilst idling at 3.5k rpm!
