Ma Gearbox

Hi All,

I have a 1988 XS which I have been sprinting with, trouble is under heavy braking or cornering it pops out of 2nd gear, but it doesn't show up on the road however hard I try! lol

Initially the main selector rod was hitting the manifold join (over the sub frame), I sorted this with adjustment. Then checked the entire linkage system, which I should say is a Baker kit, then checked all the mounts and still haven't solved the issue. Latest attempt was a gearbox brace/stabiliser from Ti motorsport, which has mad the selection nicer, but not cured the problem.

Having drawn a bit of a blank, I am going to rebuild the box during the winter, thinking it is 2nd gear synchno. Now thinking again that it maybe the gear worn itself?

Anyone else got experience as to the cause of these issues? I know that ultimately only a strip down will show the real cause within reason.

Should add that a second-hand box isn't really a solution as I want to fit a plate diff for next session so the box will be pulled apart anyhow. Also BE4 box isn't an option in the Road Going class.

Have you got an uprated or new bottom mount? This kept happening to me and putting in a Ti motorsport poly lower mount sorted the problem.

Cold be the plastic selectors in the box having worn down. You may be able to replace them with metal ones from a later type box. Theres quite a few threads on MA box maintanace on here, try a search to get a few ideas.

I have or at least the reciepts with the car say it has a set of Baker mounts. Not sure, but you could be right that it still isn't solid enough on that bottom point.

I had read about the selectors being used from a later box, which was something I was going to look at when rebuilding the box.

I did try a search, but this 3 letter thing is a real pain and couldn't really find any conclusive findings that people have found on stripping the box. Just sort of want to know what I am letting myself in for when it comes to rebuilding.

Use the google advance search, it has no letter restriction.

Ti motorsport do a gearbox brace. It stops any sideways movement which stops it popping out of gear.

I've sold the car so have a spre lightly used one here if you are interested, £10 delivered.

Ok, I am going to rebuild an MA box in the next few month. Thing is I was hoping to find a manual or an exploded drawing showing the order and any key clearances, etc.

205 haynes manual details it pretty well, the workshop version you need not the service and repair one.
