What Size Of Slimline Fans Should I Buy?

Recommended Posts

gavbrum

Hi this is my 1st new post and I'm needing some advice. I've purchased 2 slimline radiator fans off ebay to replace my faulty fan but the guy emailed me to find out what size I want. I just want to house them in the double fan plastic holder thing so a bit unsure which size to get. Any idea what size I can go for. I'm assuming the bigger the better. Much like PC cooling. I realise i'll need to reverse the polarity of the fans to turn them into pusher fans (although i dont have a clue how to do that). Any advice would be much appriciated.

you only really need one mate tbh.

i have a 12inch (oer :) ) one and it cools the car fine and thats a gti6 engine.

just swap the wires round the make the fan go the other way, as long as it has the capabilities to do that

The only fans that fit in there with the correct mountings are the std fan's, Aftermarker ones would be much smaller as they have a surround themselves (Normally)

yeah mine has its own surround, i was guessing that the op's need for slim fans would have meant he had ditched the std cowling??

not quite true

you might be able to swap the wires round to make the fan run the oppsite way but it wont be as efficent,as the design of the blades is diffrent

eg pushing blades are a diffrent shape from pulling blades.

Yeah I tried them. £220.17 for motor fan and blades. I'm gonna have a look at it tonight and see what the actually is up with the fan. Might even be faulty wiring or something. Thought that since it had stopped working and I was gonna have to open the car up a bit anyway I would be just as well to just replace the fan. It's now obvious now that the slimline fans are not going to be a direct replacement for the original one and I'll have to fit it to the radiator. I'm gonna have a think about it. I'd prefer a standard fan to go into the cowling but until I can get one I might just get one of the slimlines. If anyone can sell me a standard fan motor I might be interested. Again thanks for the info. Much appriciated.

Have you actually confirmed that the fan itself is dead? The radiator fan not working is almost always down to either poor/corroded connections or a faulty radiator thermoswitch, rather than the fan itself.

Try bridging the fan switch which is on the top right of the radiator on the inside near your battery. There are 3 connectors as it is a 2 speed fan. Fans don't usually die, but the wiring to the switch usually does.

ok sorry you are right, but i was assuming that with most slimlin fans they are reversable for either push or pull and the blades are designed to be efficient both ways

to the op i do have a couple of std working fans about somewhere if you need them?

Cheers for all the responses. I got one of the 11" slimline fans off ebay and managed to fit it into the cowling (I had already ordered it before I posted my initial post). I also wired the new fan motor to the existing Pug connector. I replaced the radiator fan switch as well (it was only £8). Cleaned all the connectors with Electrolube spray to try and clean them up as best I could. Still no joy. When I leave the engine ticking over it slowly gets hotter and hotter until after about 15-20 mins the warning light comes on and I have to swich the engine off to let it cool down. The fan still won't switch on. Iv'e been told it could be a faulty thermostat or a blown fuse. Could it be that the connectors are totally corroded? Any ideas. Don't know what route to take. As regards to the last reply I've no idea how i can bridge the fan switch without damaging the connectors on the wiring loom. Are replacements easy to get hold of? Or are they just a crazy Peugeot only design. Thanks for all the help again.

Got fan working. Faulty wiring was the issue. Fans been replaced and fan switch replaced but would probably have had to replace them in the future anyway. Live and learn. Cheers for the help.
